?CHAPTER THIRTEEN?
(*I don’t want to marry you??…*)

She shook her head. She pushed him away and bolted out through the door.
Why she was running away from him, she couldn’t tell.

Why now? Is she supposed to be angry or to be happy? Her phone buzzed, she reached for it. Jeff was calling.

“Where are you?” he asked her immediately she took the call.

“I’m on my way home.” she flagged down a taxi and got in.

“Where did you go?”

“I went over to Jasmine’s place.” she lied.

“Jasmine? Are you lying to me right now?”

Her heart skipped. She was mute for a while. “I’m not.”

She heard him scoff and she shuddered.

“Jasmine told me you left her house few hours ago. I’ve been in your house waiting for you for close to two hours and you tell me that you’re in Jasmine’s house?”

She took in a deep breath,

“Jeff so? Must I always relate to you about my life? Must I tell you everything? Jeff, you’re not my father! You’re my boyfriend for God’s sake! Stop yelling and getting angry for no good reason.”

“What? Are you talking to me like that?”

“Yes! And please, stop nagging over unnecessary things! I h@ťě when you do so.”

She hung up and took in a deep breath. What’s his problem? The last thing she needs right now is for anyone to bother her.

She reached home. She climbed down and went into her house. She nearly bumped into Jeff.

“You still here?”

He perked up his brow looking at her with a surprise look on his face. She made to walk past him but he pulled her back.

“Whoa! You’ve grown up then.”

“Grown up? I’m twenty-nine Jeff. Not a kid.”

“I mean you…you’re talking back at me?”

“You’re expecting me to say sorry. Curry at your feet and plead for mercy? I’ve had enough Jeff. I’ve had enough from men. All I need now is to go in to my room, freshen up, sleep and wake up and think about my life. Think about what I have achieved for the past twenty nine good years of my life. Isn’t that stupid? Going after men and pleading with them to love me for a long time. It ends tonight so please, let me be. Don’t bug me and leave. ” she pointed to the exit, “Now!”

“You don’t even want to hear me out.” He scowled.

She put her hands on her waist, “Hear you out? When you almost ruined my evening by starting it up with a nag.”

“I just wanted to know where you are.”

“I was Dee’s house. What you gonna do? Hit me like last time? I swear, I do call the cops on you.”

He sighed. He took her hand while she slipped off, “Don’t touch me.”

“Just keep quiet. I want to take you out.”

She shook her head, “No, I don’t want to go anywhere with you. Just leave.”

He grabbed her arm forcefully and led her out. “Let me go Jeff! I don’t want to go anywhere with you.” he forced her into his car and soon, he drove off.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

“Having a date with my girlfriend, is that too hard for you? I know you’re angry but, you can’t take it out on me.”

“You started it Jeff. You come over to my place. You get angry and yell at me, worst part, you don’t even trust me.”

“When all you do is to lie.”

“Lie? You make me lie.”

“How? Because of Dee? That’s why you lie? Is there something going between the two of you that I don’t know about.”

“You don’t have to know.”

“I don’t have to know?” he swerved the car and brought it to a stop. He turned to her, “I don’t have to know and you expect me to feel secure in this our relationship.”

“Now you want to know? You never cared to know even when I cared to explain.”

“Diane…”

She grabbed the door and made to open it but he pulled her back.

“I am sorry Diane. I know I have been an @$$h0le to you but I’m sorry.”

She fell silent. Jeff never says SORRY, what happened today? Maybe because she’s fed up of him already.

“Can I move now?”

“Take me back home. I don’t want to go anywhere with you. ”

“I want to show you something.”

“Something like what?”

“I’m trying to propose to you.”

“Propose??”

He nodded and brought out a tiny diamond box from his pocket. He opened it and a ring of diamond glittered into her eyes.

“Jeff, what is this?”

“I realize Diane that, you’re the only woman I can and will love. No one but you. I want to…”

“Jeff stop,” she pleaded. She didn’t want to hear anymore. All she wanted from Dee was to look at her or love her and she finally got it but she’s no longer interested. All she ever wanted was to be married like other women and now, Jeff is proposing and she doesn’t feel like that she needs right now.

“I love you so much Diane. Forget the fights. It’s just me feeling insecure all the time.”

“No, I don’t want to marry you…” she opened the car door and stepped out, her eyes were full of tears. What have she done to her life? This is what she always wanted but no?

“I’m sorry Jeff, but I really don’t want to marry you. ” she opened the car door while Jeff held her arm as if to stop her from leaving.

“Is it because of Damien? I won’t bother about him anymore. So please stay with me.”

Someone suddenly pulled at the car door and forced it open,

“Dee, what are you doing here?”

His eyes met the ring on Jeff’s hands and he scoffed,

“So you weren’t really joking about the marriage.”
