At night, before they sleep, Rose went to Gifts corner and find her lying on her bed already and almost dozing off, Rose woke her up, sleepily Gift stood up from the bed yawning and at the same time she signed.
Ohm Rosy! you frightened me. I almost forgot that I am not at home and slept off so easily like that, Ohm mama, I want to come back home oo! She said frowning
Rose tapped her again and she became fully awake, Rose looked at her friend, Gifty, did you pray before going to bed.
Gift robbed her eyes with her finger, after a while she replied, yes ehm I mean no I was too tired so I just did sign of the cross.
Rose held Gift’s hand and told her, me too I am equally tired and today really was a stressful day but we should manage and pray for God’s protection through this long night
You are right Rosy but ike adigi m (I don’t have strength) Gift said drowsio
Me too but we should manage and pray, please kneel down Gift let us pray, Rose told her insisting
Gift sluggishly knelt down and Rose lead in the prayer, the prayer was short but mighty and an amen from Gift crowned up the prayers
Rose brought out her olive oil and applied on her forehead for protection and gave Gift and she did the same, they exchanged good night and Rose went over to her bed and lie down
Ater some minutes, Gift came over to Roses bed and asked her to shift for her so that they will sleep together, Rose asked what happened to her bed she said that she can’t sleep there alone because she have not slept alone in her whole life before and she’s kinda scared now
Rose burst into laughter, but you were already sleeping before I came to wake you up for prayers now, were you sleeping with any one then?
Gift: Rosy, you won’t understand ooo, the thing was that I don’t know when I fell asleep, you know that my bed mate was gisting me so I don’t know when sleep took me, but now you have brought me to consciousness and I am no longer ignorant of where I am so I can’t sleep all alone
Rose can’t stop laughing at her friends attitude.
Rose: So Gift, you can be this scared, oh my jezz I never knew ooo, but when you talk to me or our friends back in the village, you will be speaking like you are too strong and can ki|| anybody that dares you, I thought you are strong, now I know your weakness Hahaha!
Rosy just leave that thing jare, that area is different and just that am not used to sleeping alone and am not yet familiar with this environment coupled with the stories I have heard about boarding school, all those things was replaying in my mind and got me scared that’s why I can’t sleep alone.
Rose hugged her friend, anyways it is not your fault , even me, I was scared when I first lie down I prayed then but the fear doesn’t want to leave me that was why I came to wake you so we can pray together and after we finished praying then, all my fears disappeared and I boldly lie down to sleep now before you came over
You know what, it is really true that two heads are better than one…. Don’t worry with time, we will get used to this place and fears will vanish away. Rose encouraged her friend
Gift agreed with her friend, and they both lay on the bed hugging each other as they slept off
The next morning was Tuesday and they woke up from bed when they heard a large bell ringing from a distance, all the girls in the room quickly got up, each rushing thro and fro to do the necessary things they should, the two friends was sitting on the bed and watching as the four girls rush to dress for school
They were a bit confused as they try to ascertain what is going on and how to join in the rush.
Amarachi the stony face girl found out that the two J. J. C was not doing anything to dress for school she approached them
Amarachi: smally, why are the both of you sitting down there like today is not school day, or are you not going to school today? You better join others in what they are doing and prepare for school, unless you want to be punished for late coming and also miss your breakfast in the canteen today.
You people should go and take your bath and get set for school, be fast so that I will take you to where you will eat breakfast before I go to my class.
Ok thanks senior! They both chorused
She looked at them smiling, call me Amy and not senior, She replied
Both girls nodded.
Gift took her towel and soap dish to go and bath alone, but Amy told her that both of them should go bath together since they are both girls and that would save time too
They agreed, rush to the bathroom took their bath and in no time they were ready for school.
Amy took them to the canteen were they eat a little portion of rice that didn’t Bellevue them, the rice was not sweet, Gift complained bitterly, Rose plead with her to manage it and behave since is what everyone is eating
By 7:25am they were in the assembly ground, after singing of hymns, prayers were conducted after which some announcements were made, the principal was also there to address the students.
Then a match past song was raised as the students marched to their various classes. Both Rose and Gift were in jss1B
In the class, they saw some of their school mates and village people too from other primary school, that made it easier for them to mingle and those that knew them began calling them Ejima (twins) just like the way they calls them back in primary school
