Chapter 10
Daphne and Kiara both slumped on a couch when they got in.
“It’s been a while since we’ve had this much fun”Daphne giggled and picked up a novel from the couch she was sitting on and stared at the cover before flipping it open.
“You’re not done with it yet?”Kiara asked, referring to the novel Daphne was holding.
“I am”Daphne answered “I wanna read it again”
“Hey!”Kiara snapped,sitting up
“What?”
“Reading a novel once is not enough?When are you going to start returning the novels you borrowed”Kiara said.
Daphne usually took novels from Kiara’s closet whenever she paid a visit to Kiara and the novels belonged to Kiara’s late dad.
Daphne was fond of not returning the novels.
“What? It’s not like you’re reading them”Daphne said.
“That’s not a good excuse”
“I know, it’s a great excuse”Daphne grinned “So,you going to tell me how your new job’s been going so far?”She asked,changing the topic.
“Good”Kiara said
“Just good?”Daphne frowned
“Yeah”Kiara nodded.
Daphne rolled her eyes
“Made any new friends yet?”
“One”
“That’s fast”Daphne said “But you know you’re not allowed to love any friend more than you love me”
Kiara giggled “Of course”
Daphne smiled satisfactorily.
“So, what’s your new friend like?”
“Well, he’s nice…”
“He?”Daphne spranged up “Your friend is a guy?How did you two meet?”
“We work in the same office. He’s the CEO’S Secretary”
“Secretary?”Daphne asked “So,your boss has a secretary and an assistant. He really has a lot of money to waste” She laid on the couch.
“So,me working as his assistant is a waste of money for him?”Kiara frowned
“I didn’t mean it that way. I was referring to the secretary. I’m sure you work way hard than he does”
Kiara rolled her eyes.
“Oh,I guess I didn’t tell you yet”Kiara said after seconds of silence.
“Tell me what?”Daphne asked
“I met Lex. He works in the same company I do”Kiara said
Daphne sat up with widened eyes.
“That jerk?!”
Kiara nodded
“He told me he began working there a few months ago”
“You two talked?”
“Yeah. He wants us to be friends”
“Is he crazy? He seriously thinks you’ll become friends with him after what happened between you two”She scoffed”Hold on,you didn’t agree to be friends with him right?”
Kiara shook her head
“That’s right. You should keep ignoring him” Daphne said
“Yeah”Kiara muttered absentmindedly as her mind went back the times when Lex and her were still a couple and the breaking up part.
“Or…Do you still have feelings for him?”Daphne asked.
Kiara shook her head “Agreeing to be his girlfriend was a mistake in the first place. We should never have happened”
“Well, it’s a good thing you realized your mistake and ended things with him”
Kiara smiled shortly.
“I should leave now”She said after checking the time on her phone.
“Of course, Natasha will get mad if you get home late”
Kiara frowned at her
“I was just kidding. Jeez, you’re quick to give me that look whenever I say something about Natasha” Daphne said
Kiara emptied all the contents of the shopping bags on her bed after she entered her room and was about to start arranging the clothes into her wardrobe but stopped when she noticed something.
The black dress Daphne wanted her to buy which she refused was among the clothes.
She brought it out and shook her head as she stared at it.
Daphne must have secretly paid for it and snuck it inside her bag.
She rolled her eyes but later smiled.
“Thanks Daphne”She said.
Emily and Kiara arrived at the company together and both met at the lobby.
Emily was the one who saw Kiara first and walked to her.
“Hi”She smiled
“Hi”Kiara turned to face her. They were both standing in front of an elevator.
“I’m guessing you forgot about our lunch plan?” Emily said
“Oh”Kiara gasped, suddenly remembering “I’m so sorry about that”
“It’s okay”Emily said.
The elevator opened and they both got in
“Something sort of came up that day and I was going to meet you the next day but I got busy and forgot”Kiara explained.
“That reminds me,what part of the company do you work in?”
“The CEO’S office”Kiara responded
“Oh, you’re the new assistant”
“Yeah”She nodded
“Being Mr Erik’s assistant requires you to be busy all the time,no kidding”Emily said “And, I’m guessing you’ll be busy all through today,right?”
“Yeah,but I’ll actually be free for lunch. If you don’t mind, I’d like to make up for the last time but it’ll be my treat this time”Kiara said
Emily smiled “I’ll look forward to it”
The elevator opened, revealing the lab.
Emily came out and waved shortly at Kiara before the elevator closed again.
“Good morning”Ken greeted as Kiara walked into the office.
Kiara responded before sitting at her desk.
“Aw, where’s your backpack?”Ken made a fake sad face when he saw Kiara didn’t bring her backpack with her and brought a white handbag instead.
“I won’t be bringing it with me for a…Very. Long Time” She said and then chuckled.
Ken chuckled also
“You look great” He said
“Thanks”She smiled.
Erik walked in minutes later.
“Good morning sir”Ken and Kiara chorused.
Erik responded to their greetings but without sparing them a glance as he walked into his office.
Kiara followed him as usual with the tablet containing his schedules and other information relating to him in her hand.
Erik sat on his chair and when his eyes fell on Kiara,it took all the self control in him not to let his jaw drop as he stared at her.
She was putting on a tight fitting long sleeved dress which stopped right above her knees.
Her short and brunette silky hair was packed into a half ponytail and her hazel eyes shone beautifully although her smile wasn’t there.
He couldn’t help wondering how dazzling it would look if she had a smile on.
He endlessly gazed at her and it wasn’t until she began reading out his schedule to him that he snapped out of his trance.
He cleared his throat, realizing he had been staring at her
“Did I make a mistake sir?”She asked
“No, continue”He said.
She finished reading his schedule to him and waited if he had any task for her before she would return to her desk since the only meeting he had for that day wasn’t until four pm.
“Send a message to each department manager. I want their reports on my desk by the end of tomorrow. The board’s meeting is in a few days” He said, bringing his eyes to his laptop
She nodded and left his office.
<1PM>
Kiara stood and was about to leave the office when Ken called her back
“Going out for lunch?”He asked
She nodded.
“Mind if I tag along?” He asked
“Sure but,just so you know, I’m going with someone”She said
“As long as it’s not a date…”
“It’s not”
“No reasons for me not to tag along, let’s go”He clapped once, grinning as he stood.
Kiara laughed.
Erik stared at them as they both left the office, wondering why she didn’t smile earlier when she was in his office and was comfortable,smiling with Ken instead.
He shook his head, pushing the thought away.
That should be the least of his concerns
“You’re meeting with the person here?”Ken asked as he and Kiara walked in
“Yep” Kiara nodded
Emily waved at Kiara when she sighted her.
Kiara waved back with a smile.
“That’s the person you’re going with for lunch?”Ken asked when he saw who Kiara was waving at.
“Yeah,do you still remember her,I broke her mug the first time you brought me here or do you already know her before?”
“Um…Never mind,you guys can have lunch alone. I’ll go out on my own”Ken said
“Why? what’s wrong?”Kiara asked.
Emily got to them before Ken could give a response to Kiara’s question.
“Hi”She smiled at Kiara and then glanced at Ken
Kiara noticed.
“Oh, he’s going with us. You don’t mind, right?” Kiara said
“Um,No”She said
“Hey there”Lex joined them “Wow,look at you”He gazed at Kiara,unable to take his eyes off her
“Do you guys know each other?”Ken asked Kiara
“Yes, we’re friends”Lex wrapped his arm around Kiara’s shoulders
“Get your hands off me”Kiara muttered and threw his hands off
He cleared his throat.
He was hurt by her action but tried his best not to show it.
“So,um…You guys are going out for lunch?”Lex asked
“Yeah”Emily nodded
“Mind if I join?”He asked.
