CHAPTER 12&13: VITO’S SICKNESS.

By; Holland Cisca.

★ ★ ★ ★

Pablo stood at the hallway which faced the swimming pool in front of the building. He was thinking over what Anastasia had said to him the previous day.

He never expected she’d break the news right in his face. He didn’t mean to hurt her or cause any problem, he was only trying to help her and free her from his brother’s wrath’s. But it seems like she wasn’t understanding it from his own perspective.

If nothing bothered him, the very part where she told him that kissing him was a mistake felt like an explosive bomb to him.

He sighed.

Novak, one of his father’s men came to call him.

” Your father wants to see you.” He informed.

” I’ll be there in a minute. ” He said, while Novak left.

He wondered why his father would want to see him. Is it concerning the case?

He left the hallway to answer his father in his room. Mr Vito was busy with his cigar and whiskey on the small stool before him.

He puffed out smoke from his mouth and nose, gulping on the alcohol like it was just an ordinary water.

” You called me.” He said.

Mr Vito glared at his son for a while before he asked him to sit down.

“Why the sad face?” Mr Vito asked his son.

Pablo passed a glare at him but said nothing.

Vito smiled. He laughed, but Pablo seemed not to care.

” Aren’t you gonna tell me what’s going on with you?” He asked again.

” Nothing is going on with me.” He replied with a stern face. ” I’m pretty sure you didn’t call me here to ask me how I am or how I feel.”

Mr Vito laughed again. ” That’s why I speak of you the most, you are the smartest of my sons.”

Pablo rolled his eyes at him, not feeling moved by his praises.

” Well, since you refuse to tell me what exactly is wrong, then I’ll just go straight to the point. ”

Pablo was hoping he had said that earlier. ” Pablo, ” he paused, then continue. ” what I am about to tell you is some thing no one else should know about, not even your brothers. ”

” Why are you telling me when you refuse to tell your own sons?”

” Because I learnt, not every story are meant to be shared.”

” Then why me? Why not Micheal or Fred?” He questions.

” Because it is my decision to tell you instead. Micheal just left my room few minutes before you walked in, I hoped to tell him but. . . I changed my mind.”

Vito was expecting to hear some thing or see a reaction from him but Pablo was quiet, just staring at him.

He continued. ” Michael might be the first child of your mother’s womb, on the other hand, he doesn’t deserve to know. So, I am telling you instead.”

” I’m listening. ” He finally said, giving Vito hope that he wasn’t actually talking to himself.

“I have been diagnosed with cancer of the brain.” He finally spat the shocking news, leaving Pablo speechless. ” Last week, I went to meet my doctor and he told me that the brain tumor was gonna be the end of me which means, I have only but a little time to live.”

Pablo was dumb folded, as he kept looking at his father. Vito understand how he felt but he has to know if no one else does.

“I’m sorry I kept this away from you for so long.”

“How long did he say you have to live? ” He asked, his voice sounding cold.

” Weeks, but it’s definitely not up to a month.” He replied.

“So, that means. . .” he shakes his head, not wanting to believe what his mind is telling him. ” So that means, you’re gonna die? Dad, you’re gonna die?” He tries to control the tears but he can’t, it rolls out of his eyes.

” Pablo, I didn’t wanna tell you this to feel pity for me. I just wanna let you know that I won’t stay by your side forever. Besides, I am old and way too close to my grave.”

” Old? ” He scoffed. ” Dad, you’re in your mid fifty, I don’t see what’s so old about your age. And it doesn’t f_cking matter how old you are, the point here is that you’ve got just weeks to live. ” He yelled, painfully.

” I know. ”

” I don’t think you do, dad. You don’t feel remorse that you’re gonna die some day soon, you act like every thing is normal and. . . okay. Like it means nothing to you. ”

” Even if it means a lot to me, I can’t do any thing. The cancer has spread and it keeps spreading. The only thing I can do is to wait till whenever death comes calling.”

” I’m not gonna let you die, not yet. You still have a long way to live, more battles to conquer and not dying. I’m not gonna let you die just like that, we’re doing some thing about your health, whether you like it or not. ” He stands up angrily, walking out of the room.

He was returning to his room, his face maintaining the angry and sad look. Deep inside him, he felt twice pain than he had already felt before.

Anastasia was walking from the opposite direction and when she saw the expression on his face, plus the fact that he didn’t notice she was coming, he turned to the direction of his room.

Anastasia was curious, she thought some thing wrong must have happened. Or some how, Micheal must have started with his thr_@t again.

Meanwhile, Vito kept smoking and drinking at the same time to calm himself down. He would have been helping matters concerning his health and simply let go of hard drugs but no, he kept taking them the more.

He hasn’t gone to the main reason for calling him, but with the anger on Pablo’s face, Vito knew talking about the main reason would end in vain since he wasn’t ready to accept the fact that his father was going to die.

Anastasia knocked on his door while he kept mourning on his death yet to come. He permitted her in. She went to drop his washed clothes into the wardrobe, and while she did it, Vito has been watching her.

She took the empty basket as she made her way to the door when Vito’s voice stopped her. “He was a good friend of mine. We did things together, guess he never told you he was a mafia too.”

Anastasia knew he was talking about her father. Yes, he never told her and she didn’t know he did work for the Escobar’s. No wonder why he told her stories like he was somehow related to them.

“But then I discovered he was playing fool on me. Despite knowing this, I didn’t stop helping him. I also offered him loans and I tell him not to pay them back. ” He chuckled. ” I thought I’ve always been the bad one, but when he sent those local boys against me, I knew it was time to stop believing I was innocent, but to proof to him that indeed I was a drug lord. And drug lords doesn’t give a d@mn on who or what you are.”

Anastasia doesn’t know why he was telling her this. All this while her father has been convincing her to believe that the Sacilian family were the baddest of all time.

Even though they were indeed the deadliest in the state and continent at large, she still believe her father was ten times worster than they are. And for no reason will she mourn his death.

She left the room.

She went to the basement to think. Right now, every thing is just so complicated and annoying than it already is. She was beginning to h@ťě every thing and everyone.

She just want to get the hell out of earth and start a new life in the after life if only the after life do exist. Besides, if escaping wasn’t the right option, death is.

She could feel the sudden change of feelings towards everyone, but it was just so difficult to h@ťě Pablo. Each time she tries to, it’s either she ends up thinking about him or she keeps loving him the more.

Erasing him off her memory is almost like digging hell.
