CHAPTER THIRTY NINE

RICARDO’S POV

She went to school to gamble! Carmen really got some nerves. I knew that she was up to no good when she told me that she wanted to go to school. I knew something was fishy about this whole situation when she was acting so super nice all morning.

Carmen can’t be good for no reason, her next move always comes out disastrous.
And of course, I can’t breathe very well, not when Carmen is in the midst of boys gambling.

I hurried out of my office to meet my secretary, Griffin, who was almost ready to ring on my door before I came out.

“Sir, we’re ready for the interview.”

“Interview?”

Oh $h|t! There’s an interview to attend to and so many other things!! And yet, there’s baby Carmen to worry about of course.

“Can you push that up to a later date.”

“Okay, so the next on your schedule is meeting the Manager of the Dior, he phoned earlier.
And your Uncle wants to meet with you.”

“Which of my uncles?”

“Mr. Juan’s father.”

“I don’t want to see any of my family members unless it’s my father or mother. Did you get that?”

“Okay, the next on your schedule is the meeting with the Dior’s manager. Should I get the car ready?

Oh gosh! I thought escaping the interview with Lucia’s company will make me reach out to Carmen faster but, I think I’ve created more work for myself.

“Let’s go for the interview.” I said and walked off while he followed me. Trying to catch up with my hurried steps and looking through his tablets.

“Which of the interviews?”

“The movie industry blah blah…”

“Sir you can’t go dressed like that. You don’t look too good.”

I looked at myself, this time, we were already in the elevator.
“What’s wrong with it?”

“Didn’t you notice how strangely everyone have been looking at you all morning. I’ve been trying to ignore telling you this but..”

“Don’t worry. I don’t owe anyone any explanation on what I wear.”

I know the dressing is horrible. Not when Carmen picked it out for me. But I have to wear it, she put in so much work to make this for me. Come to think of it, did she pick this out to punish me or to act nice towards me.

“Sir, you can change in the closet room. I’ve already picked out a suit for you to wear.”

“I said it’s okay.”

“Okay sir.”

I scoffed and the elevator chimed at same time, opened and we both stepped off. And of course, my dressing sparked off reactions. It should. I don’t care. I didn’t even care about the side talks from my workers when I came to work in the morning. So why will I worry now? All I need to do is, get the interview done, attend the meeting with the Dior’s manager, push up my schedules till the next day and hurry up to meet Carmen.

She needs to explain to me why she’s gambling. Why is she not fighting anymore but to gamble. I thought she said she wanted to go to school. What happened to schooling?
Must she surprise me in one way or the other. Now, it’s not lashing at anyone online, or picking fights and booking them. It’s now to gamble.

No tangible explanation from her and I will have to ground her. Oh yes! I’m going to do that since she have chosen not to grow up.
I might even have to restrict her movements since that’s what she wants! I clearly told her that she’s a target to my family now.

Stubborn Carmen.

Will she listen? It’s almost like everything I say pass from one ear to the other and then to the floor. It never gets into her head.

She will always do that one in her mind. That one which makes her Carmen at all times.

“Are you okay sir?” Griffin asked as he tapped my seat jolting me back to my senses.

“Yeah I am.” I looked around the space, the cameras which were already set up, producers and directors conversing and trying to set things straight within themselves.

Then the anchorwoman walked in smiling gorgeously followed my Lucia who winked at me as she settled down into her seat.

Though she was sitting a bit far away from me, she couldn’t stop smiling sweetly towards me. Making my body cringe and wish she can stop annoying me with those looks of hers.
I’m already annoyed as it is and I won’t want her to add to it.

“Griffin.”

“Sir.”

“Phone Tony. Now!” I said and he nodded. Before he turned to go. “And make sure to keep an eye on her. I don’t know what Tony is upto. Losing his job have been falling in love with him these days. And I will make sure that dreams comes true today.”

He stood listening, likewise the rest of the people who are around me. “You may go.” I said and he bowed and left.

“So shall we start?” The director asked, we all nodded and after series of processes that follows turning on a live broadcast, the show started.

And it was moving smoothly, questions easily asked and answered. I made sure to prove my point in every question, I wanted to shock everyone that I’m not the Ricardo they used to know. This is a new side of me which is sprouting up and no one can dare curb it.

Jokes were shared, though not funny especially when they were cracked by Lucia, but not to appear sick or a sadist, I laughed lightly towards her or smiled to go with the flow.

I changed sitting positions from one space to the other, I drank endless water since this interview was taking longer than expected. Not when Lucia was trying to seek attention and pity from everyone or maybe her fans.

She kept flicking her hair from side to side, casting eyes at me. What she’s trying to achieve, I don’t get it just yet and I don’t want to. I’ve already warned her to stop wh@ťěver she’s doing earlier, but I guess being an actress have eaten into her brain that she no longer thinks anymore.

I sighed. I checked my wrist watch, it was mid-afternoon. And still the show was running.

“So tell us Mr. Ricardo, we’ve had so many things you said about how you want to run your company and how to handle your family who pose as a thr_@t to you. And also about your sincere sponsorship to this industry too.”

“Yes??” I urged her on.

“So now, let’s talk about your woman.”

I perked up my brows. “Woman?”

That is not included in the script. I checked the paper they handed to me shortly before the show started and there’s nothing like this question on the script.

“Yes. There are sparking dating rumours between you and our lady Lucia, is that true?”

I glanced at Lucia and she was smiling sheepishly or rather nervous. I snorted. If she wasn’t so sure about my response, then why did she insight the anchorwoman to do something like this?

“You don’t have to ask him that Mr. Shin.” Lucia was saying sweetly. Flicking her hair from side to side. And the hell, it was annoying. I cursed myself for finding it cute back then. How I’d fall for her, each time she flicks her hair like that.

I must’ve been delusional then.

Can’t she let that hair rest? That’s why I like Carmen, her high hair bangs, long hair always tucked behind her ear except she’s fighting and she have to get it all messed up because of dragging and pulling.

“Mr. Ricardo??” The anchorwoman jolted me back to my senses. I raised my brow to signal that I’m still here with them. “We’re still waiting for your answer.”

“Uh…I don’t think I want to talk about my personal lives just yet. Not yet. I think I have a lot of time in the future to talk about that.” I replied avoiding Lucia’s presence completely. I don’t care if she’s gonna be embarrassed or not.

I didn’t tell her to start this up. And she wasn’t expecting me to say YES to help her save face. Not when there’s Carmen. She’d skin me alive or maybe bite her tongue and die because of what I did.
And who knows if she’s not watching this TV show at the moment.

That cute little witch.

Her anger isn’t something I want to deal with right now.

“Does that mean that you are not into Lucia.”

I shrugged. “Well, we used to date. And I used to love her too.”

“Yeah, we used to date but we’re now buddies.” Lucia chipped in trying to sound undisturbed but I knew she was. Her eyes says it all.

I looked away from her when she cast me her pitiful eyes. No pitying, this is what I promised myself. I don’t have to pity anyone. Not Lucia. Not even Carmen either.

“Okay. So who are you into now? There were rumours circulating that you’ve got a new girlfriend.”

“A wife.” I corrected and stood up immediately. “I guess we’re done here because all the questions following these, are all not in this script.” I said politely while the Camera was turned off.

Griffin came to my side as I stepped out of the set. He gave me a bottle of water which he had already opened. I drank from it.

Not long or maybe before I could reach my office, headline have started flying.

THE CEO IS MARRIED.

COULD IT BE TRUE? THE CEO IS MARRIED?

WHO’S THE LUCKY BRIDE: WHY DON’T WE KNOW THE FIRST LADY OF THE ALEJANDROZZ

COULD HE BE LYING: HE CAN’T BE MARRIED AT HIS AGE!

LUCIA PUBLICLY REJECTED BY THE CEO

LUCIA ADMITTED TO A PEACEFUL FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN HER AND MR. RICARDO

And a lot of them. The CEO this, the CEO that. Psst! And my phone didn’t stop flooding with messages.

So much for revealing that I have a wife. “Sir, I do
witchink you did the right thing by saying that you have a wife.”

“It’s gonna help our stock price and I’m not going to hide that fact forever Mr. Griffin.”

And not when Carmen is out somewhere causing trouble. What if she gets caught up in public and I need to appear to save her, what am I going to classify myself as.

But I wish she can stop causing so much trouble. I didn’t say she shouldn’t fight for what’s right, what I’m saying is that most of them isn’t necessary. You can’t be in the right all the time.
Always fall out, reform and stand tall again.

And I guess Carmen doesn’t fall into that category and I can’t ki|| her. Stupidly enough, I love her like that. The nicey attitude she displayed this morning scared me so much. It’s better she’s Carmen than trying to be someone else. I won’t be comfortable like that.

“Sir, you’re fazing out again. You need to sign this so I can get the car ready to meet the manager. We’re thirty minutes late already.”

I signed the papers he asked me to sign and sighed out again. “Did you contact Tony?”

“I can’t reach him.”

“You can’t reach him?” I repeated after him, heaving. I checked the time. Half past four! “Can you check on him again?”

“Won’t it be better if you call Miss Carmen?”

“No. Carmen isn’t someone you can call like that, not in times like this.
Keep checking on Tony, please.” And with that, we set out for the meeting.
.
.
.
.
.
Coming back around 10pm in the night, really exhausted, I was greeted with the news that Carmen is still not back from school.

And what made me very angry was the fact that Tony was the one standing infront of me and reporting such news to me.

I grabbed the collar of his shirt. “What did you just say? I left her in your care and you tell me that she’s nowhere to be found! Then why are you her bodyguard?!”

Geezus!! I tried her line severally, no sign of her.
All kinds of emotions surged into me. I’m gonna tear this whole house down if I don’t find Carmen tonight!!

“What’s happening?” My mom asked as I kept making a ruse, the guards running helter skelter, calling, recieving and tracking Carmen’s GPS.

Victoria must be so happy as she kept smiling at me when she came out of her room. My niece was watching me display my madness. And I have never been this mad in my life. Carmen. What’s with her? Why is she not home? Did she get caught up in her game? Then what?

Panic won’t let me speak.

“I can’t find Carmen.” I said with lots of fear in my voice. “I don’t know where she is. I can’t find her.”

They took her. My family have finally taken her!

“Tony you’re fired!! I don’t want to see you anymore. Please. Just leave my presence now!!”

“Calm down son.”

“I can’t mom, not when I can’t find Carmen. And I swear, if anything happens to her, I won’t spare your daughters. They would see the other side of me which is as reckless as they’re.”

“Ricardo!!”

“Mom, I promised dad that I’m gonna take care of her. I promised her father.”Tears dropped on my face.

“Sir.” Griffin ran to me panting, cutting off the pity party conversation between my mother and I.

“What?” His eyes were giving me hope. My heart was beating faster than normal. “Yes? Did you find her?”

And he nodded. “Yes. I’ve found her.”

I was so happy and at same time angry, especially when I finally stood infront of her, unharmed, just by herself with a guy which she’s sneaking off for God knows why.

Anger filled me and then it died down. “You scared me Carmen! You did!!!” And I slowed down. I thought the anger was gone but it actually isn’t.

“Take her home.” I ordered the guards.

“Cardo, I can explain.”

“Don’t you dare speak to me.” I snapped at her still brimming with anger.

She was mute. Then innocent looking, my weakest point about her is when she appears innocent. Like she didn’t know what she did wrong.
Even when she is wrong in every way and every form. “Take her home.” They tried to touch her but she won’t bulge.

“Cardo.”

“What??? I don’t want to talk to you right now. Just go home.” I tried to be as polite as possible, I didn’t wanna scare her as much she did scare me.
When deep down, looking at her little figure, her age, I desperately wanna shout YOU’RE GROUNDED FOR A WEEK! but I held myself in, walked straight to my car and got in.
.
.
.
We got home, I ignored her walking straight into the room with her following from behind.

“Cardo, seriously, are you gonna ignore me all night?”

I ignored her. “Just wash and go to bed.” I said mildly walking into my study and she followed me still.

“Cardo I’m sorry, I didn’t know__”

I turned my front to her immediately and flinched, cutting her short.”You didn’t know what?!! Carmen look at the time and you didn’t know what?!” I breathed out. “Just go and wash yourself and go to bed.” I was back to playing calm.

“I said I’m sorry.”

“And you think sorry will make all of it go away? Carmen, you told me you want to go to school?” I was advancing towards her. Past anger welling up. Recalling how I concluded so quickly that this was a handiwork of my family, how terrible I felt to the point of tears because of her!!

And what? She’s just sorry?!

She was pulling back, while I advanced forward. “You told me you wanted to go to school. And what did you do in school? Gamble? Carmen you were gambling in school!?” I was pointing my finger at her.

“It was fun for me!! I did it because it’s fun for me!!!” She yelled back, but not strongly like she used to.

“Was fun? Even tonight is fun too right?”

“I was__”

“Just stay out of my sight. I don’t want to see you.”

“Cardo?!”

“I said leave.”
