CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN

CARMEN’S POV

“You…you really want to go to school?” He repeatedly asked me, dropping his spoon on his plate and fixating his eyes on me.

Yes. I want to. It’s a decision I reached within myself. That I will go to school. Maybe just for today or maybe for today and tomorrow, or maybe till the next. I don’t know why I suddenly felt like going to school but I knew that it is what I needed at the moment.

“Carmen, I don’t care if you go to school or not. I won’t pressurise you to do what you don’t want to do.”

“I’m fine.”

Psst! School maybe fun yunno. I haven’t tried surviving in school and it’s high time I tried it out. It might really look good on me.

“Carmen, you are scaring me.”

“How?”

“You’re being overly nice today, are you okay?”

“Can’t I be nice? Just eat and go to work, you’re running late.”

And he did eat, watching me carefully and after he was done, he cleaned up and walked out while I followed him from behind.

Then he stopped when he reached the parking lot. “You sure you’re going to school?”

“Yes. I’m going to school.”

He still didn’t believe me. I don’t believe in myself either. I just suddenly woke up and decided to go to school. My reason, I haven’t discovered one yet. All I know is that I want to go to school. Maybe make friends and have fun.

“You sure you are not looking for an excuse to cause trouble while I’m away?”

I frowned at him. “Trouble? I don’t find trouble, trouble finds me.”

“I know. ” His car door was already open, as he made to go in, he turned to look at me one last time. “From school, come straight home. Okay?”

I nodded my head.

“And…”

“Cardo.” I interrupted. He should leave already and stop worrying about things like this.

“I’m just shocked and worried at same time.” He hugged me. “I will make Tony and two other guards follow you to school.”

I pulled away. “You don’t have to. I’m going to be fine on my own.”

“You’re not. And not even now. You better don’t make look for you. I don’t want to hear that you fought in school today.”

“I’m not a kid who actually fights all the time. Not like I love to.”

“I know.” He said ironically and got into the car.

RICARDO’S POV

Carmen is going to school didn’t stop ringing in my head, why? Why would she suddenly want to go to school?
Not even that, why did she wake up with a changed attitude? Why is she suddenly acting like a wife? I mean, is this how she is or she just decided to shock me to my bone marrow?

“Sir.” Griffin jolted me back to my senses and I became aware of my environment but why I was here? I couldn’t remember because I never thought about that since I entered this conference room.

My mind was all about Carmen. What she’s upto. Is she okay? Suddenly playing submissive towards me is shocking and unacceptable. Like, it’s not Carmen at all. Carmen do yell, act stubborn and stick to her own beliefs and wreck my brain trying to think things right with her.

But she said OKAY?? And she served me…why? Is she cooking up something that I don’t know of.

“Sir..” Griffin touched me again and I came back to the environment.
I looked around at the grim faces, the sad faces, the angry eyes all boiling into me. But why? Oops! It’s the board members, I’ve called them in earlier for a meeting. I remembered.

I turned to Griffin. “What?”

He pointed to my tablet which was right infront of me and I scrolled through it. “Go on.” I said still looking through it.

“Mr. Ricardo, I was saying that you have no rights to take the company rights away from us!! We take care of this company right from the time of your father’s.”

“I have no rights??” I loved that statement, my eyes peered into the middle aged man’s eyes.

“Why don’t I have rights when I’m the CEO of this company?”

“Mr. Ricardo, you will have to step down. You can’t be CEO when you’re not in your right state of mind.”

“Exactly Mr. Ricardo, don’t you think you’re marring this company the more? Don’t you think we’re just letting you off because of your father and then you take all of us off this table! How impudent!!”

Impudent. Another older man was slamming the table and conversing with the other angry men.

“Can you look at that young boy? How dare him! Even when he never deserved the CEO title.”

“We don’t need him anymore, we don’t need him on that seat anymore. He gaht to leave. Someone like Juan, or Uncle Ronnie should be the one sitting down there and not a little rat like him!”

“Tsk! And he even fired all of us. And you have the guts to mar our reputation online. How dare you!”

“That you are on that seat is because we are your support. You can’t have this company without the board members.”

I let them speak, air out their mind, say all sort of $h|t to me, they’re older and I wasn’t expecting anything less from them. I was looking out for all of them, their expressions, their faces. There’s something I wanted to know. How deeply they’re involved with my family, and from their words, someone like Uncle Ronnie and Juan should be the one leading…

“Or maybe Bernadette, by right, she’s supposed to be the one on that seat. But because she is a woman, they sidelined her. Is that fair?”

And Bernadette too. None of them wants me unless it’s one of these three on seat. And I think it’s because they have some collision with them, some sort of a deal or money, which is always involved in stuffs like this.

Uncle Ronnie, Juan and Bernadette, they’re the ones who are doing this $h|t to me. The rest of the family are only supporting.
And amongst the three, only one person is leading. Who could that be?
Uncle Ronnie might look older but he may likely support his nephew, Juan or his Niece Bernadette. And he might be at the top since he may be decieving the two into thinking that he can work their way to the top.

Which means that Bernadette and Juan maybe slaving for him.
I sighed as I was wrapping all these in my head.

“Mr. Hugo Eduardo.” I called as he turned to look at me from where he sat.

“Yes??”

I smiled as I went through his profile, his details. He’d be so shocked when I tell him his sins. I’ve made up my mind on what I want to do. I’m going to use them against themselves. Since everyone in my family is manipulating them for one thing or the other, then, I’m gonna do the same thing.

Mr. Hugo Eduardo is the lowest ranked board member in the house. He rarely talks and I know people like him are filled with ambitions and can betray people easily to get things they want.

He’s someone that can do anything to protect his family too. His daughter, Michealie is his favourite child, and instead of any harm coming to her, it better come to him.

“Mr. Hugo, you’re now appointed to the rank of a decision maker for the branch of the Alejandrozz designing company in Valencia, Valencia Spain. You make the decisions over there and you report directly back to no one else but me.”

Every one’s jaw dropped. Silence filled the room. No more talking. They were surprised, including Mr. Hugo. Hot glances were exchanged.

I smirked. Mr. Hugo stood up stuttering, unable to speak. “Sir_”

“Don’t make mistakes. Don’t try me Mr. Hugo. Anytime I discover that you’re playing tricks on me, Michealie is her name right? She will have to pay dearly for your mistakes. You won’t want Karma to visit you so early in life right.”

“Yes sir! Tha..thank…thank you sir.”

“Are you reinstating him into the office?” Griffin whispered into my ears and I nodded. I guess he was shocked too.

“Take record of that.”I told him and he jotted down on his notepad.

“Mr. Ricardo!!” Mr. Carlos sprang up from his seat, fuming at me. “Mr. Ricardo, that was managed by Mr. Juan, that company in Valencia was managed by him!”

“Mr. Carlos, you are now dealing with the materials and brands for designings which works right into this company, home and abroad!” I announced.

And he kept quiet, he didn’t say anything again. He just gulped, surprised and at same time shocked.

Fool!

“You are not going to reject it? If you’re that loyal to my family instead of your own CEO you should reject this, or you still think I’m a child?”

“It’s not…” And he sat down, no one was speaking up again.

“Here.” I tossed a file to them, “I changed the routine of everyone in this company. Including the board members, you can’t be board members when you don’t have a reasonable job than criticize me, I’m giving all of you a chance to redeem yourself.” I stood up, cast eyes at them.

All loyal to their tongues now.

Old men.

I knew this is how to get them to listen to me. I own this company and no one is going to run it with me except myself.

“Mr. Hugo, I need reports before the end of today, send it to my email.”

“Yes sir.”

“Mr. Carlos.”

“Sir.”

I smiled when I saw that SIR roll out of his tongue. “Hold a conference meeting with the press, and explain what happened yesterday and the progress we’ve made too. Okay?”

“Yes sir.”

“The rest of you, find out your job on that file over there and start getting your work done. Did you get that?”

“Yes sir.” They all chorused, some feeling embarrassed while some said it in a tight-lipped way. I don’t care, as long as I’m enforcing my own laws on them. I won’t give a f-__-k.

“And Mr. Miguel, you’re the head of finance, I’m more concerned about financing and that’s why I pointed it out to you.”

“I need reports on my table immediately.” I said and left while they bowed at me, watching me leave with Griffin following me behind.

“Sir, that was so clean! Wow!!! Look at how you managed those men.” Griffin said.

“Do you think I’m foolish too?” I asked.

“No. Not even once. You don’t seize to amaze me with the way you deliver your work. But at first, I thought so.”

You thought?” I cast him a glare and he gulped, his eyes shaking.

“You know, with the rumours going on about you. I thought you were like that.”

I smiled and patted his shoulder. “It’s okay. The files on the companies managed by my family, have you sent it to my email?”

“Yes sir, and I’ve already set it out like you wanted me to.”

“Okay, then.” He clicked the elevator button as we got into it, he pressed my floor and the door closed.

“My wife.” I remembered once more. “She’s acting strange.”

“You mean Carmen?”

I nodded. “She just woke up this morning acting so sweet and she suddenly wanted to do what she vowed never to do before. I’m confused, maybe something is wrong with her, something I don’t know of.”

“Or maybe she’s changing for the better.”

I shook my head. That’s not Carmen. She’s like a constant number. She never changes and even if she does, it’s for a while. I wonder how this will turn out, for the better or for the worse.

“You seem so worried about her.”

“All the time. I’m worried about her every time.”

We both smiled at each other. “You married?” I asked him and he nodded.

“Yes. Last year.”

“And how is she like?”

“Sometimes sweet, sometimes annoying and sometimes quiet, her mood changes all the time.”

“That’s how Carmen is too.”

We both smiled again. “And I think all women are like that. You can’t fully understand them all the time.”

“Really??” I asked and he nodded.

“Yes. They change, you might not know their reason but they do.”

I nodded and just at same time, the elevator chimed and opened, we both got out, Griffin opened my office door and I walked in to see Lucia sitting down on my couch and sipping tea. Our eyes met and she stood up, smiling at me.

“What are you doing here? Get out, I’m busy.”

“Ricardo, can’t you cut me some slack? Okay? I know I do everything wrong to you and I even smell and reek to the extent that you don’t want to have anything to do with me, but can’t you even let me talk to you, we’re friends after all.”

I ignored her and turned to my secretary. “My family will start calling my office very soon, they might barge in here, please make sure that it doesn’t happen.
And lest I forget, I need to buy a house. Make sure it becomes available before the week runs out.”

“Yes sir.”

“And what’s my next schedule?”

“You have an interview with the__”

“With my industry.” Lucia chipped in and I looked from her to Griffin.

“Is that true?”

“What they wrote here is…”

“Yes, that’s the movie industry I work for.”she chipped in again.

“Cancel that.” I told Griffin immediately.

“No Sir, it’s to talk about the sponsorship, and how to go about the show, the launching of the show. It’s all on the Alejandrozz since you agreed to sponsor it.”

I heaved. “You may go. Prepare for it. I will be out in a jiffy.”

“Sure sir.” And he left.

Lucia came close as I sank into my chair, “Ricardo, why don’t you wanna have an interview with me? Because I’m sure that’s why you tryna avoid my industry?”

I ignored her, trying to stay steady with my work. But she persisted. She won’t let me breathe. “Because you’re in my past already. I don’t want my wife to see you and get worked up about it. I’ve already hurt her enough and you in the picture__I don’t want it, she needs to be in a peaceful marriage with me and I’m tryna make that work. Don’t ruin it.”

She scoffed. “So I’m ruining your stupid business marriage? If you worry about her as you claim to be, why haven’t you let her out to the public.”

“It’s none of your business Lucia. Have the interview started? Because I don’t see why I’m getting interviewed already, even before it actually started.”

I got back to work, while she stood staring at me. “What’s it again? Lucia, you’re not going to leave?” She’s distracting me with her presence.

“You’re becoming meaner and meaner as the days roll by.”

“Well thanks for the compliment.”

“Just___”

“Please leave Lucia, I feel like she’s gonna come here any minute and meeting you here, I swear, I don’t want a scratch on her body because of you.”

“What?”

“Please leave.”

“I hope you come to your senses soon. If it’s because of her father’s business which you think you’re going to inherit later on or maybe merge with the Alejandrozz that’s___”

I slammed the table to keep her mouth shut. Don’t she know when to leave and when not to. Don’t she get it? I don’t want her, I don’t want to pity her, see reasons with her anymore.

There’s Carmen.

And there’s her heart to protect.

There’s her dignity to protect too!

“Don’t you get it? Leave! I will see you at the interview venue, so go.”

And she stormed out of the office angrily, cursing at me as she left but I didn’t care. I have so many things to worry about and that doesn’t include her at all.

I phoned Tony afterwards. “How’s she doing? Is she coping very well in school? Is she fighting? Have she eaten? What did she eat? Is she with friends? What kind of friends? Male or female friends? Uuhh… Anyone bulling her?”

I couldn’t slow down. I can’t when it comes to Carmen. I don’t seem to know how to hold it in when it comes to her.

If that’s a spell cast on me. I guess I’m gonna be bewitched by it forever.

“Sir??” Tony was confused. I could tell from his voice. I’ve asked so many questions and where to begin to reply all of them is gonna be a problem for him.

“Is she happy?” I asked.

“Yes sir. She’s smiling and she’s with friends.”

“Friends? What kind of friends??”

“Male friends.”

Male__what??

“Male friends?? What are they doing?”

“They’re …”he hesitated, which means Carmen is upto something fishy again. I know she would be. Carmen cannot just change.

“Tell me the truth, don’t lie. What is she doing?”

“She’s__she’s__ gambling.”

What?!!!!!

Gambling!!

I sprang up from my seat.

Who the heck gambles in school if not Carmen.

I heard her voice in the background. “Tony, I need to buy more cards. Pass me that money!”

What? She’s really gambling.

She said she wants to go to school, she said she said it like someone who is suddenly becoming serious about life, but what she actually wanted was freedom to do anything she wanted.

Like Gambling!!!

Oh Carmen!!

I clenched my fist.
