CHAPTER 27 — CONFRONTATION: THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.

✯✯✯✯✯✯✯✯

“Lucille…my baby sister.” For the first time in years, tears flowed freely down Daniel’s cheeks. Twenty years, he had searched for her and now she is here in his arms – he couldn’t control his happy emotions.

Fiona mouth parts in shock, her body runs cold. She couldn’t believe it, her therapist – the one person who had always encouraged her and the person who never ever judged her is the same person whom life she had destroyed.

They stay still for a moment before he pulls away meeting her confused gaze. “W-who…w-what are y-you talking about?” She questions.

“I understand… you’ve lost your memory but don’t worry I’ll help you remember.” He quickly blurts out.

Her eyes comprehend the situation — her client is currently tied up with her father and two people. Her head starts to ache.

“I’ll explain everything, all I need for you is to sit down and listen.” Daniel demands.

She shakes her head, no…no…no, although she cannot fully comprehend the situation – all she knows is that these people are held hostage and she has to stop it. “No!” She backs away. “I-I don’t know you and you’ve held this people captivate and you expect me to listen to you?! No…never!”

Daniel looked turn apart by her words and in anger yells, “KEEP QUIET! Listen to me Lucille — I. Am. In. Charge. Here. And you’ll listen to wh@ťěver I say. NOW SIT DOWN!”

Immediately, she takes a sit on the worn out couch. Daniel takes a deep breath slowly to calm himself down before turning his attention back to his hostages.

Lucille glances at everyone. While Jason and Monica give her a tired look, Fiona and Peter give her pleading looks. “Now that everyone is here…shall we begin.”

“No…” Fiona pleads desperately. “No… please don’t do this.” She sobs. Lucille has been the only person who had ever cared for her and now she is going to lose her love and respect.

“Your crocodile tears aren’t going to save you.” Daniel smiles wickedly.

“Please…why are you doing this?” Lucille asks.

“Lucille…” His hard gaze softens. “You are my sister, my younger sister and–”

“No!” She cuts off, “I am not your sister, you must be confused because–”

“How? If you don’t believe me then here is our father.” He spat the word in disgust, “you can ask him.”

She glances at him, “no…I don’t trust him.” Her words make Peter’s head bow in shame.

“I wouldn’t either.” He replies, “but I can prove it.” This captures her attention. “Twenty years ago. Our father abandoned us, our mother had turned to alcohol to numb the pain but after a few months, got back on her feet again. Shortly after, a fatal collision accident claimed her life.”

Lucille holds her chest tightly as if struck, her breathing heavy. He knows everything, every single detail. But…how? “Our mother’s name is Dianne Dumont and our father Peter Dumont.” He explained. Jason and Monica glance at each other, picking the pieces of the puzzle.

“How?” She stands up briskly and walks to him without an ounce of fear. “How do you know all these?”

“Because I lived through everything. I had seen the pain in our mother’s eyes when Peter walked out and the struggle she had to go through to keep us alive and well. All her efforts – in vain.” His tone held so much pain.

“Am so sorry,” Peter sobbed out.

“Shut the fück up!” Daniel shouts making Lucille flinch back.

“Y-your m-my b-brother.” She stutters out and immediately embraces him. For so long, she has yearned for a family and finally she has someone. They both embrace, tears rolling down both siblings cheeks.

Twenty years of been apart and finally they are reunited. “Am so glad your okay…” Daniel places a kiss on her forehead as they pull apart.

“Me too.” She smiles. Her brother, her brother. She has a brother! But every time she tries to recollect her memories, it does goes blank and her head starts to ache.

“B-but I can’t remember anything.” She states sadly.

“It’s because of that woman. The mistress,” seeing her horrific look, he pauses and assures “don’t worry, I’ve sent my men to acquire concrete evidence against her.”

Those words brings joy to heart, the mistress is finally going to pay for her sins. “Thank you.” Once the two finish basking in their happy reunion, they turn their focus back to the Dumont’s.

“What do they have to do with this?” Lucille asks.

“You’ll have to sit down for this…”

They all sit in silence. On Lucille’s demand they release everyone but Daniel’s men still block the entrance for security measures. Fiona’s hand on her thigh, heart hammering: how is she going to explain to Lucille — to try and convince her that she wasn’t that kind of person or she isn’t that kind of person anymore. The only person who cared about her…

Peter head is still lowered in shame. What was he even going to say? That he didn’t mean to abandon his family… Heavens know Daniel wouldn’t waste time in putting a bullet through his skull if he tries to say anything foolish. His plan was simple: leave Fiona and find his family and beg them to forgive him. But everything is ruined, oh. . .if only he can turn back the hands of time.

Jason didn’t want to believe anything, yet. He knows his father is nothing but a bâstard and had always thought that his mother is unlucky to have stayed with a man like him. But, this night is going to reveal that his mother is not so innocent after all.

Monica just hopes that she is going to make it out of this alive. She already knows her mother is nothing but a snake in a green grass. What she didn’t know was that her boss is actually her stepbrother. Although, they are some mysteries she still has to connect.

“I could remember the day, mom had brought her best friend to stay with us. Mom was determined to make sure that the woman had everything needed. She clothed her, gave her shelter and everything she could ever want. I can also remember the day, I had caught the best friend and dad lips locked in the kitchen.”

Lucille looks up shocked. “Dad was having an affair?” All her life, she had thought her father had left because of not wanting to face his responsibilities.

“He was with our mother’s best friend whom she gave shelter to… And her name is–”

“No! Please!” Fiona screams.

“Fiona Dumont.” Daniel announces. Jason’s mouth hangs open in shock and he’s not the only one — Lucille’s crumbles to the ground, hands on her cheeks as if she had been slapped.

“No…” She looks to Fiona with a shattered expression, “t-that’s n-not true.”

Daniel moves to her side, rubbing her shoulders comfortingly. “I know how your relationship is with her, and I know you may find this hard to believe. But it’s the truth.” He shambles down the hall, coming back with a frame in his hand. “Take a look at this.” He says, handing her the frame.

Lucille covers her mouth in shock, seeing the framed weeding picture of her father and Fiona. “H-How could you?” She whispers, voice shaky.

“She and Dad had an affair under mom’s nose for years…until she had managed to convince him to leave us. At first, I had thought that mom was extremely heartbroken because of the way Dad had left but it turns out – she had been shattered because of her friends and husband’s betrayal.”

“H-How could you mom?” Jason looks at her with disappointed. Monica only rolls her eyes.

“Am sorry! Am so sorry!” Fiona sobs out.

“That’s not all. Did you know that on the day of mom’s accident… Her supposed ‘best friend’ watched her die?” Daniel asks rhetorically. As he watches Fiona’s mouth part in shock, he smirks and moves closer to her. “That’s right. I was there and I saw as you stood there and did absolutely nothing.” Daniel reveals leaving: Jason and Lucille in shock once more.

“NO!” Lucille screams and immediately stands up and rushes to Fiona. Grabbing her shoulders and shaking them vigorously, “tell him it’s not true! She was your best friend, TELL THEM IT’S NOT TRUE!!” Tears roll down their cheeks.

“A-am sorry L-Lucille I–”

“Is that all you can say for yourself! Is that the only excuse you’ve!” Lucille screams. The only thing Fiona could do is shake her head and let her tears of regret and anguish flow freely.

“Am so STUPID!” Lucille screams violently, her body shaking in fury. “HOW COULD I BE SO STUPID!!” She screams once and falls to the floor weeping. Daniel moves to comfort her, carrying her to settle on the couch.

A graveyard silence falls on them. Lucille had stopped crying, she only looked ahead with a numb expression. Once she had calmed down fully, Daniel continues his story. “Mom had used all her might to save the both of us, she threw you to the right side and me to the left. I was helplessly looking left and right for any help and that’s when I sighted Fiona – instead of helping me – she had stood there in horror and did nothing.”

“Mom told me to run and I did, as soon as I got far enough – away from the vehicle – it exploded. Seeing mom engulf in flames traumatized me, I had stood at the far end weeping and by the time I had fully comprehended the situation and gone back to find you… You were gone. No one knew I had survived.”

Her brother had to go through so much, he had watched their mother be engulfed in flames. Daniel wiped the tears from his eyes and continued. “I didn’t know what to do but I knew I had to stay strong,” his gaze moves to Lucille. “I never stopped looking for you. Ten years after the accident and I knew I had to get some help if I would have any luck of finding you and so I went to the only person I knew: Dad.”

Peter raises his head, his surprised gaze meets Daniel’s hardened one. “What? You never came to me.”

“That’s because I didn’t make it far. I had tracked you down without difficulty and was ready to swallow my pride in order for you to help me. And when I had reached your home — I saw you ( through the window) carrying him,” he gestures towards Jason “up in your arms smiling so lovingly and proudly at him. And before I could go further, Fiona stepped in and you kissed her passionately.”

He glares fiercely, “from that day I vowed to destroy you – come what may. Here I was — leaving off scraps and moving from shelter to shelter looking for the only person I had left and you were laughing and kissing like you didn’t walk out of a family.”

“I held onto so much bitterness and rage – it helped fuel the dark fire inside of me — it made me what I am today. I spent my life, looking for Lucille and also watching you — placing little seeds of destruction in your life’s.” He smiles manically.

“I was the one who had given your daughter the information she needed to blackmail you… I was the one who introduced your precious son to the Life of drugs — I would’ve liked him if he didn’t have the guts to steal from me.”

“YOU MONSTER!!” Fiona yells, “your the one who destroyed my family!”

“Am the monster? Says the woman who snatched her best friend’s husband, watched her die and gave her newly wedded husband an illegitimate child.” Everyone goes still.

“Oops… Did I say that?” He smirks.

“What are you talking about?” Peter asks.

“Don’t you know? Your not the only one she was sleeping with when you and her were having an affair. Unfortunately, she didn’t count on you actually leaving your family but once you did that and her lover boy ran away – of course she needed someone to pin her pregnancy on.”

“WHAT IS HE SAYING!?” Peter directs his question to Fiona. “Answer me!” He screams, frustration gnawing at him.

“Go on, tell him the truth.”

Fiona knew there is no use in lying, “h-he is right, Jason is not really your biological son.”

“No…” Jason and Peter whisper brokenly at the same time. Daniel chuckles while Lucille sits still.

“Looks like Peter small pënis wasn’t enough for you.” Daniel taunts.

“Wait… Am I also illegitimate?” Monica asks.

Daniel frowns, “unfortunately no. You are our stepsister.”

Monica doesn’t react.

“Boys,” he calls.

“Sir!” They respond and stand at attention.

“Tie them up and move them back into the car. We are going back home and once we are settled in, I’ll decide what to do with them.” He commands. The men nod and immediately follow his orders — it is practically easy to tie them up because none of them put on a fight.

Everyone is practically numb.

As they say: nothing stays hidden forever.
