Chapter Thirty eight ( Final Episode)
Andrew was still trying to come to fact with what he just found out when the door to his office opened and his mother walked in.
“I heard you were asking for the CCTV footage of my office”She asked looking Apprehensive.
“I will only ask you once. Is Claire really my wife?”He asked starring at the computer in front of him.
“Yes”She replied.
“Why? Why did you lie to me?”He asked.
“You must have watched the footage of me talking to her. You must also have heard my reasons”She replied.
“I want to hear them from your own lips”He said.
“Fine. I lied to you but it was only for your own good. She was someone you married without my consent. Someone you were willing to discard your own mother for. When you woke up without remembering a thing. I couldn’t lose you again so I decided to create a new life for you” she said.
“I understand you wanting to protect me but you should have told me the truth when she showed up. You should have told me instead of making me believe more of your lies. I called her a liar, I said a lot of hurtful things”he said thinking about Claire.
“You shouldn’t be worried about that, afterall you don’t feel a thing for her or do you?”She asked.
“I don’t know but what I know is that I feel bad for hurting her. I feel so bad that have got to see her. Have got to talk to her”He said as he began to leave.
“She is on her way to the airport as we speak”Lucia said suddenly.
“What?”
“She came to see me this morning. She will be taking the evening flight. Go see her and talk to her”She said and quickly he left heading for the airport. He kept on calling her number but there was no answer.
He got to the airport to see that there was still time before the Australia plane took off. He began looking for her amongst the crowd and while he did that, he kept on calling her but there was no answer.
He decided to use the broadcasting room , he got there to find a lady speaking on the mic. He told her of his plight and she was at first hesitant to help him but she decided to convey his message.
“Mrs Claire Black. Your husband Andrew Black wants to see you. So if you are listening to this , please come straight to the broadcasting room”She said and repeated it again.
He waited hoping she would make it to him before the call for the Australia plane takes off. He was still waiting some few minutes later when he saw her walking towards him.
Immediately he walked to her. Relieved at seeing her again.
“What are you doing here?”She asked.
“I can’t let you leave “He said softly.
“Why? Do you remember me now?”she asked.
“I don’t remember but I watched the footage of your visit to my mom and I know that you have been telling me the truth all along”he said .
“Oh”She said softly.
“Am sorry for all the mean things I said and did to you and am hoping you stay so I can make it……”
“What’s the point?”She asked suddenly.
“What?”
“What’s the point in me staying when you don’t remember anything. Am just a stranger to you”She said.
“You are my wife. You said so and have watched the footage and…”
“Do you even remember the day we got married?”She asked and he kept shut.
“You don’t remember me and you said this to me that even if you remember, you wouldn’t want to take me back afterall it’s been three years.”She said
“I said that when I didn’t…….”
“Your right in saying that. Its been three years and I couldn’t let you go. I think it’s time to do that now”she said and quickly he moved towards her holding her hand.
“Don’t say that. We can work something out “He said
“It wouldn’t work. You said so yourself and I believe it. The you now doesn’t have Claire here”she said as she layed her hand on his chest.
“You don’t love her, you don’t know her, you don’t remember the memories you shared. Whereas I do. I remember everything and am not willing to have the new you. Have been here long enough to know what the new you is like and I can tell you that I don’t like it”She said
“So it’s best that I leave. If somehow you remember me and remember our memories together then you can come to me. You will know where I am since you’ve remembered”She added.
“And if I don’t remember?”He asked.
“Then there is no hope for us. I don’t want the new you. I want my Andrew and I will only have him”She said as she moved towards him to kiss his lips.
“This is goodbye then”She said as she send a smile his way before walking off
There was nothing he could do but to watch her leave.
EIGHT MONTHS LATER
Claire got back to school quite late. She had been sent by the school head to carryout some assignment for the school and due to the traffic, she came back late.
The school was a bit empty except for the students who were boarders.
It’s been eight months since she heard from Andrew. Maybe he still didn’t remember her. She thought as she made her way to the school head office.
She had been happy when she heard the call broadcasting announcement at the airport. She had thought that he finally remembered her but he didn’t. He had only seen a footage and If he hadn’t seen the footage. He would have kept on believing his mother word.
She couldn’t have him as Jack Bradford. She only wants Andrew and if he doesn’t remember then it’s best if they both live their lives apart. She thought.
A girl who was about eight ran towards her giving her an envelope.
“Is it for me?”She asked and the girl nodded before running off. Finding it odd, she opened the envelope and read.
“Come to the school garden” She had wanted to go the school head first but she couldn’t control her curiousity and went to the school garden instead.
She was surprised to see her grandmother, Nick, Alicia, Ben and some of her colleagues at the advertising agency.
“What are you all doing here? It’s not my birthday or something?”She questioned as soon as the greeting was exchanged.
“We came to see you” her grandmother said.
“And since it’s a surprise we couldn’t tell”Nick added.
“Well am happy. Really happy to see you all here but what’s the occasion”She asked and they all gave each other a sly look.
“What’s that? You all are keeping something from me right?”
“That’s because I ask them to “A voice said behind her and she stood still. She silently counted to three before turning. Hoping with all her heart that she hadn’t heard wrong.
“Hope I didn’t come back late?”He asked and quickly she ran towards him, giving him a tight hug.
“Do you remember me now?”she asked.
“Mrs Claire Black. The woman whom I met during a blinddate. The same one that had made me believe that she was a lesbian along with her friend. The girl I married three weeks after meeting her. The girl I fell for due to her loveliness and kindness. Should I keep on talking?”He asked
“No”she replied happily as she hugged him again.
“It took a lot of effort. With the help of the doctors and also with my strong will to remember you. It all came back. Am sorry it took too long”He said smoothing a strand of her hair.
“It doesn’t matter how long cause I would have waited for you. I hoped this day will come soon and here it is”He said and she stared at him.
If he had been lying his eyes would have told her but he wasn’t. The man gazing at her with so much love right now Is him. Her husband. The only she loves.
“Thanks for coming back to me. Thanks for remembering”She said as the tears she has been holding back began to pour.
“You shouldn’t cry. Am sorry I made you cry Claire. I h@ťě myself for it and to make it up to you. I will do my best to never make you cry. You won’t have a reason to cry again cause I will make you very happy”He said wiping the tears off her face.
“I love you Andrew”She said before hugging him again.
“Same here my dearie”He replied as everyone clapped, screaming out good wishes for them.
It took a while for them to make their escape from everyone and when they did. He took her to a beach house where they walked hands in hands on the soft sand watching the sun set.
“By the way. Do you still see the future?”He asked
“It all ended when you had the accident three years ago”
“Really? I would have Like to know how our future will be ?”He asked
“It doesn’t matter. Am rather glad that I can’t see the future”she replied.
“Why? ”
“I prefer not knowing it. We should take each day as it comes. My future with you shouldn’t be seen ahead”She replied.
“That’s fine with me. As long as I have you always I don’t care and before I forget. Mother will be coming back in three days time. She wants to see you and she wants to apologise for everything”He said and she nodded feeling relieved that Lucia have finally accept her.
“Now my darling Mrs Black, Mind spending some time alone with your CEO”He asked and she gave him a naughty smile before nodding.
“Race you to the house”Claire challenged and the two ran like little kids. Glad to be back in each other lives and also knowing that they will be together for good this time.
