Chapter Twenty Five
Fannie was heading to her room when she saw Tiffany Sitting alone in the rest room.
Knowing that she was still hurt by Alfred words, she went to her.
“Thinking about Alfred?” Fannie asked
“Yes”Tiffany replied as she showed her a picture on her phone.
“Who is that?”Fannie asked.
“A doctor. He was recommended to be the best”Tiffany said.
“Will he be coming to see Alfred?”Fannie asked.
“I made an appointment with him but the big the issue is Alfred. Ever since he turned blind. He has been refusing medical treatment. He wouldn’t want to go for the appointment”Tiffany said.
“Then we will just have to force him to do so”
“Force? How do we achieve that?”Tiffany asked
“Just leave that up to me. I won’t let him miss his only chance of seeing again. You just set everything and I will make sure he makes it there on time ” Fannie said.
“Thank you Fannie. I don’t know what I will do without you”Tiffany confessed.
“We’ve got to be strong for Alfred”Fannie replied.
“Why dont we just tell him about you?”Tiffany suggested.
“We can’t! He can’t know that am Fannie”She said remembering his words.
“Why?”
“He told me a while ago that he doesn’t want Fannie around him. He doesn’t want her to be with someone like him and that if we were to bring her back. He would only find a way to make her leave again. If he should know that am Fannie. He wouldn’t want me to stay and so let’s keep it a secret. At least until his appointment with the doctor” Fannie begged and Tiffany nodded.
“While I stay with him. I will make sure he gets to do all his exercise. So don’t worry about anything and just focus on the business and his appointment”Fannie said and she nodded.
THE NEXT DAY
“Good morning Alfred” Fannie greeted as she stood in her bathing suit with Alfred in front of the pool.
“What’s this? Why do I feel like am not in my room?” Alfred asked as he sat on the chair while Fannie stood beside him.
“That’s because you aren’t in your room”Fannie replied.
“Where have you brought me to?”Alfred asked looking angry.
“You’ve been locked up for a long time. It’s time you did some exercise ” Fannie stated.
“And who are you to decide that?”He asked getting more angry as time went by.
“I can decide that because am your nurse”She replied.
“A nurse whom I didn’t bargain for. How on earth did you even get me here?”He asked.
“By drugging you a bit. The water you drank after eating was drvgged. I had done that to help you sleep better but it helped me better this way”She replied proudly.
“Look wh@ťěver you are called. I don’t plan on doing any exercise. So take me back to my room”He yelled at her.
“First of all my name is Fa……Maddy and secondly we came here for some exercise and so we will be doing that” She said almost telling him her real name.
“You don’t tell me what to do”He said as he stood up.
“How will you find your way back?” Fannie asked when he walked past her.
“Me being blind doesn’t stop my will to do something”He said as he kept on going like the blind man he is.
“Not if I can stop you”She said as she moved towards him to push him into the water while she jumped after him.
“Are you crazy!”He yelled.
“Swimming helps the body. So try swimming”Fannie said and when he didn’t budge. She move to his back and held his arms.
“What are you doing?”He asked.
“Helping you swim”She said as she took hold of his hand again but he pushed it away.
“I can do it myself”he replied as he began to swim by himself while she followed him to make sure he is safe.
“You see! Your being blind doesn’t prevent you from doing your daily routine”She said.
“How did you know that Swimming is part of my routine?”He asked.
“That’s because am your nurse. Tiffany filled me about your routine”She lied. She knew that swimming had been part of his routine because she had been by his side to know that kind of stuff but that had been years ago. When they had been very happy together.
“Fine then. Help me out of here. Have had enough”he said and quickly she got out and helped him out.
While she led him back to the sitting room. She wondered how she will tell him about their next routine. She knew he would get angry but she had to tell him.
“Your next routine is having a picnic outdoor with me”she said as they stood in front of the stair case.
“Forget it! I never leave the house”He said firmly.
“And it’s time you did. You will get to enjoy the fresh air, the food and every……..”
“But I can’t see them. What’s the use of going outside when I can’t see anything. You might have succeed in getting me to have a swim but forget about this out door thing cause I won’t be going”He said as he turned to the stairs.
Fannie was about to help him up when a maid was carrying down a tray which had something hot on it but she tripped making the whole content in her tray pour and immediately Fannie pulled Alfred out of harm’s way.
They both fell on the floor, spraining her wrist as they fell.
“Are you okay? “she asked not worried about the hurt in her hand.
“What happened?”Alfred asked as he couldn’t see what was going on.
“A maid tripped while bringing down a tray”She replied as she helped him up.
“Am sorry. Am really sorry”The maid said as she apologised to them.
“It’s okay. You can leave”Fannie said dismissing the maid.
“You aren’t hurt anywhere right?”He asked suddenly.
“Am not”She replied hiding the fact that her hand was hurting like crazy.
“Then let’s go back to my room”He said and silently she helped him to his room.
A while later Alfred sat in his bed. Thinking about the day events when he suddenly heard some maid saying.
“Maddy is really doing her best for the picnic but I doubt if the boss will go”
“He will. After all she was hurt because of him”
“I doubt if Maddy told him about her wrist hurting. Even if she did. He wouldn’t leave the house for her. After all he has become someone cold. Colder from the man we used to know him as”
“So Maddy efforts will just be put to waste?”
“Of course. She knew that yet she kept on preparing the picnic. If I were her. I would have quit being his nurse…….”
He couldn’t hear a thing because their voice drifted down the corridor.
She had told him that she was fine. Why lie to him when her wrist was injured. He thought silently to himself.
Fannie stood in the garden putting the last touch of the picnic things when she saw someone walking towards her and it was none other than Alfred.
She was so happy to see him. Though he was being walked towards her by the butler.
She had been wondering how she was going to talk him into coming for the picnic when he showed up himself. She was glad to see him that she ran towards him like a little girl.
“You came”She said excitedly as she took his arm to lead him to where the blanket have been spread.
“Why didn’t you tell me that you had injured your wrist?” He asked.
“Oh that! It’s nothing”She replied as she helped him sit on the bed spread before sitting on it herself.
“Now that you are outside. How do you feel?”She asked changing the subject .
“Still in dark. I can’t still see anything” He said gently.
“What a beautiful view!”A voice said and she looked up to see Grace. Alfred ex wife coming towards them.
“What are you doing here?” Alfred asked knowing who it was.
“So it’s true. You’ve become a blind bat”Grace said mocking Alfred Blindness.
“How will you take care of Sarah now. Don’t you think it’s time I get custody of her”Grace asked not even bothering to acknowledge Fannie.
“Get out of here. Sarah custody have been given to me”Alfred replied.
“But that will soon change when the judge realise that you’ve become a disable”Grace said.
“Aren’t you being too harsh?”Fannie spoke out for the first time and she turned towards her.
“And who are you?”Grace asked.
“Am his nurse”She replied with so much pride.
“How dare a mere nurse talk to…..hold on a minute. I know you and you are not a nurse. Your his lover right?” Grace said guessing Fannie real identity.
She didn’t think that Grace would recognise her but she did and soon Alfred will find out the truth.
