Chapter Sixteen
“What do you mean by he left? Where did he go to? It’s your wedding today and he came here for it”Fannie threw these questions at John as she felt nervous.
“He had to leave because something urgent came up at home and he already apologised for being absent in my wedding”John replied.
“Do you know for what reason he left?”Fannie asked.
“I think it has to do with his wife return. Seems like Grace returned and so he left to see her. But Alfred truly is a romantic at heart. Though he kept on saying that he wouldn’t have her if she came back to him. He went running to her after getting a phone call. Love can make a man do crazy things” John said to her thinking he was doing a good job but instead he only broke a sad news to Fannie.
“Wait! Are you going out or……”He stopped when Fannie didn’t give him a reply even as she walked off.
He left and it’s all her fault. She thought as she find a secluded area to cry her eyes out.
If only she had told him of her feelings earlier. He wouldn’t be on his way back to Grace. She thought as she cried softly.
She wasted the opportunity given to her. She gave up the man she love. She Is a real loser. Fannie thought as she cleaned her tears.
She has to stop. She still have to attend Dora wedding and play her part in all of it. She shouldn’t let her eyes get puffy.
Still having that thought in mind. She headed back to the house to prepare for the wedding.
A WEEK LATER
“You can’t do this to me Alfred! You just can’t!” Grace yelled after him as she followed him into his study.
“I can do wh@ťěver I want and right now. I want you to leave”He said as he took his seat.
“But this is my house too. You and I are still married”Grace said
“Our marriage ended today and here is the proof. It got annulled today and you signed out your right as Sarah mother to me. So am her legal guardian”Alfred replied.
“You swine! How can you do this to me?”Grace yelled at him.
“It is you that ruined yourself. You left without telling us where you were going. You didn’t even bother to let us know where you are. Sarah hardly recognise you because you gave up on her as soon as she was born and I stopped thinking about you or anything that has to do with you years ago. You don’t have anything to return to because you threw it all. Have been patient enough with you for a week. So do me a favour and leave” Alfred said as he took out a ledger to go through it.
“I won’t let you do this! “Grace yelled as she carried the ledger and threw it on the floor.
“You can’t do this to me! After using me you think you can just discard me like that or did you think that I didn’t know that you only used me six years ago”Grace yelled at him.
“Just so you could forget that lady who caused you so much hurt. You slept with me on the pretence of Alcohol. You got me pregnant and out of obligation. You married me only to make my life worse. While you silently mourn over your lost love. You neglected me. You made me feel worthless even when I tried to make you notice me. A woman has the right to live her life and so I decided to leave everything. So why am I the only one that has to suffer?” Grace finished as she began to cry.
“Am sorry. I never knew all that. My getting drunk and getting you pregnant wasn’t a pretence at all and I married you because of the Sarah and you both safety. I tried my best to make our marriage work but it didn’t. Am sorry that I had made you suffer”Alfred said knowing that part of this is all his fault.
“Saying sorry won’t be enough”Grace said as she began to use his sympathy towards her.
“What will be enough?”Alfred asked and a while later Grace stood by the doorway starring at the cheque in her hand.
“Thanks for this and I hope that you will keep on being this generous in the future”She said letting him know that she would be returning in the future.
Alfred sighed in relief when she finally left his office. If this continues she will keep on coming back when the money runs out. He has to find a way to stop her before she makes it a habit.
It’s been a week since he got a call from Tiffany who told him Grace had arrived. Wanting to talk to her about their divorce. He left the Van residence, missing John wedding.
It took him a week to get Grace sorted out because she refuse to leave and he since he had nothing to return to at the van residence. He decided to stay.
Fannie made her choice and that choice is Chris. He only has Sarah and he should be there for her. He thought as stood up to pick up the ledger Grace had thrown away when he received a message.
He went to check it only to see a invitation card and the name written on it got him feeling angry and sad.
Just then another message dropped and he read the content.
“Fannie will be getting married to Chris
Tomorrow. I don’t know why they are
Suddenly rushing the whole thing but
What I can tell you is that Fannie isn’t
Marrying him for love and if you hadnt
Left on the day of the wedding. She
Would have made that clear to you. So
Am begging you to stop Fannie from
Making the worst mistake of her life.

From Dora ”
On reading the message Alfred called the number immediately.

“Am still wondering why you guys came back early from your honey moon”Fannie said as she and Dora sat at the bar enjoying a Ç0çƙtail drink.
“I don’t think I can keep on doing this”Dora said looking a bit guilty.
“What do you mean?” Fannie asked looking a bit worried.
“The reason why John and I came back suddenly is because of Chris. He along with John told me not to tell you about their plans but I think I have to”Dora said
“What are you talking about? What are you guys hiding from me?”
“Chris plans to propose to you officially tomorrow. Everyone knows about it because he wants it to be a surprise to you but I can’t keep quiet anymore. What will you say to him tomorrow. It’s a big party and all. It will be a big scandal if you say no to him” Dora said.
“I think I will have to talk to Chris on this issue” Fannie said as she thought about Chris plans for her tomorrow.
She didn’t get around to telling him that she wants out of the relationship because she didn’t want to hurt him.
Whenever she tried to tell him. She would put it off for the next day and the next and the next day.
She didn’t have the courage to tell him but on hearing what he plans for her tomorrow. She had to make sure she tell him about it tonight.
“And there is another thing”Dora said
“What?”Fannie asked.
“I sent a text to Alfred but I lied a bit. I told him you and Chris are getting married tomorrow and that if he still loves you. He should come back to stop you from making a bad decision and he……”
“He is what? “Fannie asked.
“He is on his way here”Dora said.
“Why did you do such a thing Dora?”
“I only did it for your happiness. Your gratitude towards Chris for his help will lead you to saying yes to him tomorrow and to prevent that. I decided to call the man you love over”Dora said.
“You shouldn’t have done that. Don’t you know that he went back home to get back with the mother of his child. Your calling him won’t make a difference because he will be with his wife and daughter”Fannie said to her.
“If you really think that way then it’s good that I came” Alfred said cutting into their discussion.
