ANSH’S POV
I can’t believe that I said that. I swear I didn’t mean any of that. Seeing Ahana with someone else other than me is what I can’t tolerate. I just can’t do that.
But she was correct, how was she suppose to know that I was planning a surprise for her. The entire day I screwed around, not answering her calls and avoiding her.
I returned home early and prepared her favorite cuisine. I worked hard doing something that I had never done before for anyone. And then I ruined it myself.
But then I saw her with Jaai. They were hugging each other and I saw him consoling Ahana over some matter. I saw her smile and I felt more anger built in me.
He kissed her twice in front of me. He even held her from her stomach and was saying her something that made her laugh. How would he do that? That baby is mine.
How I loved her reaction when she saw the beautiful setting. I wish I could capture that moment. Her eyes were a bit red but she still glowed in a light grey short knee length dress which was showing her small baby bump.
How desperately I wish to touch her. I was worried because of the heels she was wearing. She even tripped once.
I wanted to be the one who holds her every time she trips….. Why can’t I be in the place where Jaai is there??
I didn’t even want to mention to her about the baby and joint custody.
I don’t ever intend to leave her but what if she decides to go taking my life, my child away.
I am an insecure person. And also possessive about what belongs to me stays with me.
” Ansh…. It’s Heights now….. ” I heard her say in her smooth and a bit croaky voice.
I turned my face away from her. My heart was full of guilt. I don’t want her to say that she will take my baby away from me.
” You can’t turn away Ansh. We are not done yet…. ”
I though that our conservation ended but this time I don’t think it will come to an end so easily tonight.
” What more is left Ahana? Tell me. Everything is ruined. Our life, our marriage….. Every single d@mn thing….” I said it a bit loudly but they were my real feelings.
” I won’t disagree with you Ansh. Everything is ruined. And reason has always been YOU and only YOU.
I don’t like blaming others but this time I am forced to. Starting from signing that d@mn AGREEMENT to doubting my integrity….. It was always you….” She was now completely facing me.
I wondered why she didn’t say anything about the baby. I thought she will charge on me.
” Yeah! Good for you. Anyways there is nothing between us…. Right? You are a free bird….”
Maybe she understood what I meant to say. But I didn’t mean it from my heart. I think I was just a bit of insecure every time.
What if Ahana really loves Jaai and leaves me for him? What about my baby….. I can’t imagine my life without it. Can she really be that selfish? No.. She can’t right? I have an equal right.
Ansh!!! Man… What are you thinking…
” Thanks for reminding me that. But I know there is nothing between us and things would never work out because YOU won’t let them work ever…..” She said after pausing for a moment and then paused again.
The next what she did wasn’t what I ever dreamt of.
She removed the ring from her finger and continued.
NO.. Please don’t do that.
“…. And this really did mean something to me.
But Just to tell you, now It doesn’t mean anything to me. You can give it to anyone who you think deserves it…. I don’t really care… ”
She pulled my hand in front and kept that gold-platinum band in my palm.
Ahana…. Trust me… It belongs to no one except you….. It never has… It never will…
I never felt so bad in my entire life. I need to go. I can’t handle this anymore. I was about to leave when suddenly Ahana’s soft hand grabbed my fist which contained the ring.
“Not this time Ansh…. Not this time you are abandoning me alone here. You have to hear it. The entire thing. You have really formed a lot of misconceptions….”
I stopped when I heard that. What was she talking about?
” It’s high time now.”
It was only her voice that was dominant tonight. I didn’t speak at all after she removed the ring. It was a blow. I never expected this to happen. This time I must have hurt her a lot.
” You think Jaai and I having something, Right? ”
She said looking it straight in my eyes.
I didn’t have a answer. I know they can’t be but then I always find them so close. Ahana’s laughs with him are something I can’t get my mind off. She is so happy with him.
” I wish…. We could love each other more than just being best friends. But it’s really unfortunate that we can’t. Not just we both are committed to someone else, but just because there wasn’t a spark between us. Not once did he or I ever
thought anything like that …. Not once…. Ansh…. And YOU…. Made me go through all of it….. ”
I looked straight at her.
Committed????
Ahana was my wife but what about Jaai??? He didn’t even have a girlfriend. I did a background check on him.
” Yeah!! If you could notice so many things, just for once, for God’s sake if you saw that ring in his finger. Just once Ansh…..”
As soon as she said it my mind was thrown in flash back. Seriously, did he wear a ring?
Of course, he did wear it. When I went to his house that night I saw it. He offered me a cup of coffee with his left hand.
And also when he was setting up Ahana’s strands of hair in her office. I was so angry all the time that although I noticed it I ignored it.
I remember it now.

Ahana sat down on the bed and I followed her.
I sat beside her. She sniffed for once. I made her cry once again. I don’t understand why I do it. And will I ever be able to keep her happy?
” If only you knew what a person Jaai Mehra is, you wouldn’t have said such a thing Ansh… I swear you ll regret it.”
” Ahana…. So, what happened? Aren’t they together?” I finally said something after such a long time.
” No…. That one small mistake changed everything. Our friendship and their relationship. But Jaai has the bravest and the strongest heart.
Despite its broken he makes sure I am happy with you. I wish he knew that it’s not possible.”
Why??? Why is that not possible Ahana??? I can try… And I want to try.
” Her name is Zara Zaveri. We three were childhood besties. You wouldn’t believe that Zara and Jaai initially couldn’t tolerate each other’s presence but then love brought them closer.
Everything was more than perfect. They were perfect and happy, so were their families.
Jaai is an adopted child. Our English teacher had adopted him but life had been so cruel to him that when he became successful his parents were once again snatched from him.
They met with a terrible car accident. Sir, couldn’t make it to the hospital also and his wife barely survived 3 hours. We were still in high school.
Jaai was really broken into pieces. But amidst all this what grew stronger was our friendship.
Jaai could complete his education from the funds left behind by his parents.
Dad, Grandpa and Ma loved him too so did Zara’s parents. He is our family now. Perhaps more than that. ”
” If everything was perfect than what went wrong? ” I asked when she stopped speaking.
But hearing Jaai’s story was really painful. That person has really been through a lot and still his cheerful smile hides his pain so well.
His agony is so much against mine.
It’s rightly said that,

” Yeah! Everything was picture perfect. That’s what we thought but it wasn’t a Fairy Tale after all. Jaai got very busy with his business. He wanted to be something.
His ambitions were huge but so his Love for Zara. But I think he wasn’t able to manage both.”
She continued. The more she spoke the more I got into it. I think I have misjudged Jaai a lot.
A flash back filled with moments of pain and happiness surrounded us.
” 3 Years Ago
It was that Fortunate Day and everyone was very happy. I think I was the happiest of all. Jaai and Zara were getting engaged officially. I was with Zara in her room. The rest of the family and the the relatives were downstairs.
A small ceremony had been arranged for the Love Birds. The Zaveri’s had a very huge mansion. And there living was large enough to host around 50 – 80 people. Only close family friends and relatives were invited.
The wedding was going to take place after 10 months.
” My!! God!! Zar… You look stunning. This colour glows on you. I swear J is going to fall in Love again…. And this time it’s going to be stronger….” I said laughing.
She blushed. Zara really was a beauty. Fair and smooth skin with light brown eyes. Today her auburn shoulder length hair were done in a simple half pony.
Zara was in a light cream hue lehenga with a off shoulder blouse. It had a pink border embroidered. With sparkles around it. She had designed it herself. So was my dress and Jaai’s. She had worked on it for about a month.
She was very excited and today it could be easily reflected through her eyes. And Jaai’s attire was also a matching one to her. Both the colours were light baby pink. Jaai’s was a light off white kurta and a jacket on it.
Mine was light pink lengehga with rose design and a sea green blouse with light golden embroidery.
A broad border at the end made it look even more beautiful. I teased her saying that mine was more beautiful than hers.
He had to wear what Zara had designed. He didn’t have any option anyways. And he was happy that way.
” Ya…. I know. But I swear he too will be looking hot in white. It suits him. Hana, look out. You may get a suitable boy.”
” C’mon, Zar…..”
” Girls…. Are you….” Ma entered calling us.
She froze looking at us.
” My God….. I have such beautiful and gorgeous ladies here. I swear all the eyes will be on you. Zara, wait still Jaai sees you. ”
We were all laughing. In about 15 minutes the rings were to be exchanged. Ma left saying that we should be down in 5 mins.
Zar, remove that band from your finger. ” I said.
She turned and made a face.
” What??? ” I gestured.
” Hana, Are you serious? J gave me this band in London, when he proposed me for the first time.
I know it’s just a single and inexpensive ring band but it means a lot to me. And also to him. So I am keeping this with me forever. ”
I still remembered how excitedly Zara had narrated the entire thing to me. How Jaai had invited her to dinner and then surprised her with a dance and then a ring with he had brought for Zara. It was really very romantic.
A side of Jaai I thought never existed. He had decorated the entire place with balloons. I was astonished when I saw the pictures. Each one had there name written on it. A soft music was playing while they swayed to the tunes of their favourite songs.
A picture perfect romantic proposal any normal girl who reads a lot of romantic novels would wish for. And that wish was indeed fulfilled by Jaai.
” Very Well Then…. But I still can’t believe how in the World did you fall for him…..” I said chuckling.
” Hana… Trust Me… I still ask myself the same question. But it’s the most beautiful feeling in the world. To be Loved so much from someone. Loving oneself is easy but loving someone more than yourself is a difficult task. I am lucky. I hope you too enjoy this.”
She said elbowing me.
” Yay!!! That you are. Anyways We ll see…. Let’s go downstairs….”
When we descended downstairs, the huge living was decorated beautifully and magnificently with orchids and exotic flowers. Their fragrance surroundings us.
A bar counter with all the brands of whiskey and liquor was arranged to celebrate the happiness. All were happy. Zara’s parents liked Jaai and were delighted that they were together. Everything was near to perfect, but it just didn’t end well. Coz… Not everytime.. All’s Well That Doesn’t Ends Well… ”
Ahana stopped midway. There were tears in her eyes. They reached her cheeks. I put my hand in my pocket to remove my handkerchief but before that she already wiped them with the back of her hands. Every guy, for once wants their girl to use his kerchief but I am the unlucky one.
” Then…… What happened? He came right? ” I asked when she didn’t speak for a long time. I was really listening attentively.
She looked at me. I had a very confused look on me. She half smiled.
” Of course he came. He didn’t abandon her. Jaai loved her then and he loves her still. ”
Was she taunting me?
” Then??” I was getting curious.
” He was just Late….. ”
Late?? So was that a problem.
” Yeah!! Just Late. But not by half an hour or 1 hour. But by almost 6 hours. The ceremony was supposed to begun at 7 pm. But he showed up at 1am,the next day.”
” What??? Are you serious? How is that possible? ” I was shocked and more that that in Awe.
” We were waiting for Jaai to come. It was already 8 now. No matter how many times I tried to call him he wasn’t picking up his cell phone. All the guests were getting restless and above all Zara’s parents.
Obviously, they were the bride’s parents after all. But Zara had full confidence on Jaai. Ma was constantly consoling aunty but giving her reasons why Jaai wasn’t on time and so was Dad to uncle.
The clock ticked fast and stopped at 10:30 pm. All the guests began to leave. I was standing next to Zara. Tears in my eyes. I didn’t expect this from Jaai. He never was irresponsible. He couldn’t do this.
This meant everything to him.
Hey!! Hana…. Why you crying? You know him well, right? He must be in some more important work than his engagement.” Zara put her hand around me.
” He will come….” She completed herself. She was more confident than anybody else and Jaai surely didn’t break it.
” Zara…. Enough is enough. He ain’t coming. Go change and sleep. Ahana, you too leave with your family. There is no engagement in this house. ”
” Daddy….. You can’t do this….”
” Zara… Open your eyes. He doesn’t love you. If he did, he wouldn’t have left you alone. Even if he comes, he ain’t marrying you Coz he doesn’t deserve. Trust me, dear you did a mistake. ”
I think that was enough for Zara to break her down. She knew somewhere deep that she didn’t make a mistake. Her Heart and Mind were in a conflict. Everyone left, leaving us alone in amidst the decorations. It was already a quater to 12.
” Hana…. He ll come…. Won’t he?”
She asked me with her tear struck eyes.
” Of course he will….” I knew he would come.
” But, what if something wrong has happened?”
Oh! God.. I didn’t think that.
Zara quickly called him. But, he didn’t answer it. Then she called in his office. The guard picked up the phone.
” Hello!! Is Jaai in the office? I am Zara here. ”
” Mam, Jaai sir left at 5 pm only… ”
Zara gave me a sudden look. God!! Where did he go? I could now see tears flowing down. I think she gave up. Jaai had let down her today.
We were sitting in the verandah. Still in our tradition wear.
” Hey!!! Zar…. I am sorry…. ”
Zara was resting on my shoulder when he came. At once her blood red eyes shot open. That voice.
” J…. Where the hell were you?”
I said promptly. He was still in his formals. Zara stood beside me like a statue.
” Look…. I am really sorry. I left the office early and then I went to….”
He stopped midway. We both were looking at him for answers. He then he removed a small box from his pocket and knelt down on his knees.
” Zar…. Wh@ťěver happened, happened for a reason. Let’s forget it. I know we are marrying. I don’t need anyone’s presence to make you my fiancée .”
Zara stood up and went towards him. I had a feeling that nothing good is going to happen.
” Jaai Mehra… We ain’t marrying.”
I gasped. Equally shocked was Jaai. I don’t think he expected this.
” Zar…. What are you saying?? ” He stood up holding her.
” My name is Zara. Stop calling me that. You have lost the right. Have you seen the clock. It’s 1:15 am, for God’s sake. You don’t need anyone Coz you don’t have a family. But I have one and my parents have some respect. Because you you, they had to face humiliation.”
” Hey!! Sweetie…. Please don’t say like this. I love you…… ”
You lost that right too, when you broke my trust and confidence Jaai. I don’t think you love me. Here, I am all ready to be your wife and look at you. It looks like someone has forced you to get up from your desk and go to your own engagement. ”
Zara was now crying. Of course, she is correct. Jaai had crossed the heights tonight. I didn’t speak anything. They had to sort things on their own.
” Zar…. Please listen…. That work was really very important. The dealers were flying back to Australia and it was suppose to take only 2 hours. It would have cost us millions of dollars.”
Zara folded her hands.
” Yay!! But you didn’t realise that 2 hours turned into 6 hours. You didn’t even inform us.
How can you be so irresponsible. Did you, for once thought about me, my family, about what the people would say? Of course. Few million dollars were more important. ”
” No…. It’s not like this…. ”
” Yes… It has always been like this Jaai. Always… Your first priority has been work. I know that you have worked hard to get all this but sometimes, family is more than that. ”
” You are being unreasonable now. Don’t act like a child. I am standing in front of you with a ring. C’mon now…. Let me…. ” He said coming close to her.
” No… Jaai. Daddy was right. You don’t deserve me. You actually don’t value your family and that’s why God hasn’t given you one….. ”
Zara was pricking his weak point but tonight she was the one whose heart was broken. But somewhere I wasn’t satisfied with Jaai’s explanation. There had to be something more to the story. He can’t be late due to a meeting.
“….. You will do this even after our marriage. I can’t live like this. I can’t sit here waiting for you while you are busy in something you love more.”
” Zar….”
This isn’t for the first time Jaai. You have always been like this from the beginning. You spoiled our each and every outing, our dates and every happy moment just because your d@mn work is more important than anything else in the world.
I am not been unreasonable. You have always proved me wrong by showing up late. I don’t want your gifts or your surprise…
All I want is that YOU should be beside me whenever I need you the most…. Coz You Are My Pride…. And No One Else… But Tonight… I Have Lost That Pride Too.. ” She said while tears didn’t come to a hault.
” I am sorry….. ”
” You always are. But this time, I am sorry. I can’t marry you. I can’t handle so much… ”
” But Zar, you love me right? You can’t do this to us. None of us will be happy. ”
” Yay!! But sometimes Love isn’t enough for a relationship. And I can’t do this anymore. You have not only insulted me but my family too.”
” But the ring you have in your hand belongs to me. You have to make me wear it. We waited for this moment since long…. ” He was pleading now.
She stopped and removed Jaai’s engagement ring from the box that she was carrying the entire evening. Jaai thought he saw a ray of hope. Even I thought she melted. She went towards Jaai and pulled his left hand and put the ring there.
” I know you would agree… Here my turn now….”
But before he would revert the gesture, she pulled her hand away.
” No….. You wanted to wear the ring so here… Be Happy. I don’t want yours. Thank you….” Saying so she walked away.
” Zar….. Wait….. Hana…. Tell her something. What is she upto? She is ruining everything. ”
” J…. You ain’t going after her. You have ruined everything. Tell me the truth. Where were you? ”
” I was planning a surprise for her. I bought a mansion, don’t you remember. I asked for your help for decorating that.”
” Are you serious ? It can’t take this long. ”
” Yes, but then the dealers called me and I had to rush to Goa. They were staying there. Trust Me. And going to Goa and coming back will consume time.”
” Fine… She needs time and space. Give her that. Make Up for her in the morning. And more over you didn’t even feel it important to call her.
Let her see your face first thing in the morning and she ll melt. Say some cheesy lines and give her some kisses. She is already yours but she is a bit upset. “”
Ahana stopped once again. This couldn’t be a ending. What happened next? If Jaai made up to her then why aren’t they together?
