Early the next morning Francis took his bath, dressed up and run to Gift’s village against his mother’s advice.
He got to her village and waited at the river bank because he was certain that Gift will come to fetch water that morning.
About 20 minutes of waiting, finally he saw Gift and Rose coming to fetch water and his heart jumped into his mind and jumped out again into his mouth and eyes that made his mouth wide open and his eyes clouded with tears.
He can’t wait for Gift to get to him but rather he ran to them and began another round of begging and pleading to Gift but she totally ignored him making him an object of mockery, Rose even tried to talk to her friend but she so embarrassed Rose like she holds her life in her palms.
Gift walked away leaving Francis on the ground weeping, Rose could not endure seeing the poor boy there because his condition is quit pitiable as some nuisance village gossipers who passed by can’t poke their noses in their businesses but laughed Francis to scorn, some even called him names just like heard Gift calls him.
Rose out of pity helped him up and started encouraging and admonishing him, she told him to give Gift some time and space that she will come around, she also told him to work hard and always pray to God that God will enrich him so greatly.
After so many words of advice from Rose, Francis left to his own village in great relieve wishing in his heart that it was Rose that he first met and fall in love with instead of Gift.
He got home and explained to his mother the whole events that took place between himself and Gift, and also told her mother about the solace and peace he found in the words and attitude of Rose.
He told his mother plainly that he is going to make himself known to Rose and then Marry her instead of Gift.
Francis mother gave that a serious thought and told his son not to go for Rose that the two girls might be the same but just that the other girl haven’t seen their house that is why she is talking as if she is better than her friend Gift
No mama not like that, that girl is exceptionally remarkable there is no point hiding whom I am anymore, I will tell her every thing about me and if God’s willing she agrees to marry me(he smiled) it will be a big blow and shame to that ruthless saucy girl called Gift, In fact mama, that girl should not bear that Gift or properly she is the gift of the devil because is obvious in her
But Francis mother was not comfortable with her sons decision.
My son, I still insist that you leave that girl and everything that patterns to her, including her friends
An old adage says, Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are.
Another adage says…. Birds of the same feather flocks together. So my son, all I am saying is that those two are even….. But if you insist that you are going for her friend, I will only agree in one condition my son.
Francis looked at her mother and was anxious to know her condition. What mum,?
You know my son, what an old woman sees while sitting down even if a child should climb the highest iroko tree, he can’t see it, So what am insinuating is this.
Don’t expose who you are yet to that witches friend yet, still pretend to be poor and know her reactions first.
Mama you are right, I will still go to Rose as a pauper I hope she doesn’t fail me too if not I won’t marry again I will just adopt as many children as possible.
Rose on her side have continued pleading with her friend to take things easy with herself, and Francis but she has refused to listen to anyone not even her mother or her friends mother too.
She claims to be a slay queen and too beautiful and expensive to suffer with Francis or any other poor man in life.
