CHAPTER FIFTY

EDGAR’S POV

“Can you see this video?” Alvaro asked pointing to the video of Carmen causing a scene at a press conference. “Why didn’t you ever tell us that she’s Mrs. Alejandrozz, why didn’t you ever mention it to us that she’s Mr. Sebastian’s daughter, the owner of our school or are you going to claim that you never knew that she’s married to him?”

I was quiet. Mute. There’s nothing to reply. I was angry at everything. Her energy, her poise as she stood defending her man was something I can’t help but admire and it hurts me so much because I’m not the one she’s defending so earnestly like that.

“Mehn! This is Carmen! Isn’t she?” Dre asked as he kept repeating the video over and over again. “why did it not cross my mind when I saw her name flying all over the internet.”

“I didn’t wanna believe it when I saw her picture with Mr. Ricardo along with the silly headlines. I just thought she’s someone who looks like Carmen.”said John.

“I suspected it, especially from her lavish spendings, I knew that she might come from a very influential family just that I didn’t wanna ask her, cus I feared she might come from a family where she’s not wanted. You know, maybe born out of wedlock just like Eddie once mentioned.” Mario added.

“I can’t believe that we all don’t know that she’s Miss Sebastian!!” Alvaro was still lamenting before turning to look at me once again, “don’t tell me that you didn’t know about this.”

“And what if I did?” I asked trying not to be offended by anything.

“Then you should’ve told us! You should’ve told me! I thought we’re friends?”Alvaro was shouting.

“And what if I told you?”

“Then I will try to be in her good books of record. I need a better job after schooling! I can’t have my father being a worker in the Sebastian company forever and possibly, I want to enter the movie industry and be a superstar just like MV, I don’t want my career to be limited and she would’ve helped me with that!”

“And is that all you care about Alvaro?”

“What else should I care about? I thought Carmen is one flimsy, troublesome and a spoilt brat and I was very wrong to think that. Can’t you see? She’s powerful. A very little but strong being! She’s Miss Sebastian and also Miss Alejandrozz, do you know how many people who wish to be her? How many girls who die to have the kind of connections she has! She almost a goddess if she’s not. I can’t believe I’ve been dining with a goddess all these time and I took it for granted.”

I was getting pissed. “Alvaro, she didn’t want anyone to know about her identity.”

“But you knew!” Mario chipped in. “There’s something going between you too which we don’t know about and you better start talking.”

“Can’t you see that it’s already hard for him being in a one sided relationship?” John brushed in.

“And that’s so bad because with what I’m watching here, Carmen loves that man she’s married to.”

“Hold on, so Mr. Ricardo is the one who came to pick her up the last time, isn’t he?” Alvaro asked while they nodded. “$h|t! How did I miss every little detail happening in this school?”

“I thought they were siblings, now that I go through all the past posts about them.” Dre said.

“Is there something like past post? Everything about that family always gets deleted in a fleet of seconds.” John replied.

“That’s to tell you how influential that family is! Alejandrozz is the biggest family anyone can get into. Likewise the Sebastian’s and both of them team up together to become one, tell me, which man will not give out her daughter in this sort of marriage.”

“Can you all stop!!! Stop all these!!” I yelled almost breaking out. I was getting weary of hearing all these rubbish. It’s so annoying to get all these messages into my ear.

“Stop? Eddie, your feelings for Carmen is not my business, not at all.” Alvaro replied.

“You were supposed to be my friend and support me.” I blurted and he smirked.

“Support you?” Mario chipped in, “How are we supposed to support you? Even the ten of us can’t deal with Sebastian not to talk of Alejandrozz.”

“I didn’t say I wanna deal with anyone.”

“But what you’re asking for is equivalent to dealing with them!”Dre spoke.

“I love Carmen.”

“ki|| it.” Alvaro said. “This is our time to shine and don’t you dare jeopardize it with your stupid feelings. One phone call from Mr. Ricardo and you will be as good as dead.”

“Carmen has a soft spot for me and I’m sure I can win her over.”

Dre stood and advanced towards me, he grabbed me by the collar of my shirt, “I think you’ve gone nuts, you’ve totally lost it. You want to date a married woman or how are you planning on doing it.”

“Please put him to bed Alvaro before I break your friend’s head.” John added.

“Why can’t you all listen to me? This is very important to me.”

“I’m trying to understand how you’re going to get to Carmen when you’re so powerless and your father is the fourth secretary of her father. I want to know how you will make Carmen yours when you’re just Edgar who is definitely going to serve her father after your father retires.”

I was hurt by those words. The looks of pity in their eyes as they kept looking at me. I clenched my fist, smiling Carmen in my head made it more annoying to me.

My father was right. What is mine is mine and I should get it. I need Carmen in my life and if I’m going to get her, then I’m going to destroy the Alejandrozz, make them powerless as I climb higher to the skies. It will take a while but I know that someday, I’m going to definitely make Carmen mine.

“Stop dreaming Eddie, I know, it hurts to have that teenager married to someone wealthy, but I don’t blame her. She did the right thing for someone as tenacious as her, being with you will waste her life. She’s born for a great cause and don’t ruin it for her. Let her go to where she belongs.” Alvaro’s advice pricked me.

“What are you saying? If I can’t get her to where I belong, then I will climb up to where she belongs.”

“I told you to put that boy to sleep but you guys won’t listen.” John repeated.

“And that’s actually true, Eddie have gone crazy.” Dre said as he let me go and went back to his seat.

“Eddie, she belongs to the riches, can you take care of her extravagant lifestyle, even your father’s salary can’t clothe her. Can’t you see the dresses she wear? Even your father’s most expensive shoe can’t buy her dresses. You can’t give her money like she will want.” Alvaro said.

“We both know that we started being friends with her because she’s rich. She takes care of every bill, every party, she throws money everywhere, Eddie, Alvaro is right, she’s actually the food for the richest.” John said but I scoffed.

They should stop talking crap in my ear.
“If she’s food for the richest, then I will become the richest and I will make her mine.”

“I want to see how you’re going to do it. But please, don’t spoil our friendship with her, I still have a lot of uses which I need her to take care of.” Dre said.

“And do you think she will be up and about now that everyone knows about her? This time, her movement is being watched by everyone.” Mario replied.

“That’s why it’s a lost cause bro, Carmen is gone and gone forever.” Alvaro repeated.

“But she’s so beautiful.” Mario said, he was looking at her picture which he scrolled through his newsfeed. “So beautiful and small, like a little girl, she came as a shock to everyone.”

“That’s why Eddie fell for her I think,” John said eyeing me, “Look at her skin, so fair and flawless.”

“But she’s such a troublemaker. She finds trouble a lot.”
And their bickerings about her won’t end but I know one thing, I won’t give up on her. Not when I have not tried to win her over. All I need is money, to get rich so I can be able to stand shoulder to shoulder with Mr. Ricardo. Maybe someday, he might crawl to my feet begging me to save him.

I can’t wait for that day to come. How many years? I know it’s useless and fruitless but I want Carmen. There’s this sort of feeling that overwhelms me, over fills me each time she’s around me. And losing her isn’t gonna be the right thing to do. I’ve spent so much time with her to give her up.

My father is right, she’s mine.

RICARDO’S POV

I waited earnestly for Amélie to get done with Carmen, she seems to be taking a longer time touching her up.
She had come over earlier on Carmen’s wish since she’s the only one she can trust with her styling and make up. And I had to give in and since morning till mid afternoon, I’ve been waiting for only two women to get done so I can leave the house.

I sighed for the hundredth time. Shouting won’t be an option, I’ve been doing that since morning, but I guess, their gist and dressing up is more important than me. I’ve slept and I’ve woken up and still, no sign of Carmen or even Amélie.

I stood up, pacing around. Griffin was behind me, typing in his tablet and making phone calls.
“Sir, we are leaving for Paris next tomorrow.”

I nodded. I’ve avoided Paris for a long time now. I guess I won’t continue putting it off. “Get the documents ready so that after today’s meeting, I will sign them,” he nodded and began to input in his tablet. “Did you check on the latest designs the company produced?”

“Mando is taking care of that. I told him to be extra careful with the leather products for shoes.”

“Alright.” I was nodding my head, still pacing and stylishly waiting on patiently for my wife.”What about Bernadette, did you put a trail on her like I told you?”

“Yes sir, I think she recently visited someone?”

“Someone?” I pecked up my brow. “Who is he?”

“I don’t know. I’m still not clear on that but I put a trail on every member of your family, I know every move they make in the house.”

“Thanks.” Griffin is so diligent and accurate, that’s why I like him so much. And I got him, all thanks to Carmen who kept firing all the secretaries I brought into the office. “What about Lucia?”

“Lucia??” He asked and his eyes went upstairs, “Um…” he stammered, his eyes wide with surprise. He pointed towards the stairs, and I turned to see Carmen standing there in a red dress that made her look like an angel. My jaw dropped to the floor. I knew that Carmen was gorgeous, but this was something else. She always kept me guessing and wanting more, but I wasn’t expecting her to look so amazing. My mind was racing, trying to find the right words to describe what I was feeling.

With every click of her heels on the steps, she seemed to descend from heaven itself. She was like an angel, walking down the stairs with such grace. My heart was pounding in my chest as I took her in, her beauty taking my breath away. “Mi amor,” I whispered, still unable to believe my eyes. How could someone be so stunning? The wait had been worth it, because the woman before me was breathtaking.

“Did you wait for so long?” She asked and I could’nt even bring myself to complain. How can I complain when I’ve lost my voice.

Carmen is a witch. Always a witch. She bewitches me all the time, I don’t know her chants but each time she does her magic, I don’t think I can think beyond her.

“You look stunning.” I said slowly and she smiled. One of her brightest smile which always spread from cheek to cheek and always got her puppy eyes bigger and shinning so bright like a diamond in the sky.

“Thanks. It’s all thanks to Amélie.”

“I’m going to have to reward her greatly for making my wife cast another spell on me.”

And she was giggling again. She slided her arm into mine. “Let’s go.”

I nodded but my eyes never left her, she was leading the way since I can’t see anything else but her. The car door opened and we got in but still, my eyes didn’t stop looking at her.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked, her voice low and sultry. She tilted her head back, exposing the graceful curve of her neck. Her hair was pulled back in a high ponytail, making her look both innocent and alluring. She was a sight to behold, tempting me like a forbidden fruit. I struggled to keep my composure, the heat of my desire thr_@tening to overwhelm me. How could I resist the temptation she presented?

“I can’t help it,” I said, my voice husky with longing. “You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. You’re driving me crazy.” She smiled, her lips curving into a playful smirk.

“Is that so?” she teased. “Then maybe I should do something about that.”

Her gaze was like a challenge, daring me to take the next step. I hesitated for a moment, but I knew there was no going back. My heart was racing, my whole body on fire with need. I was powerless against her charms.

I held her face, caressed her cheek and pulled myself closer to kiss her. “Cardo, remember we’re in a car going to our company.” She whispered lightly and I groaned out in frustration.

“We can turn the car around.”

“Cardo, you’re becoming too much these days. You don’t seem to act like I used to know you.”

“Not when you’re charm I can’t resist, I can resist everything but not you. If you were Eve, I can understand why Adam ate the apple.” I said and she bursted out laughing making her look more alluring and inviting.

She was holding her stomach as she laughed. “What silly joke is that?”

“I’m serious, I won’t go astray and I will always worship God but if I Satan tempted me with you, I’m sorry but I might actually go to hell.”

“Stop making such jokes.”

We arrived at the company, the board members seated, some members of my family on seat too, I think everyone from all over the company branches showed up especially Bernadette, there were press men everywhere, what they were cooking up this time, I don’t know and I don’t care. All I care about is Carmen who is new to all this and might get lashed at for being a child in our midst.

The meeting began, everyone ignored her, questions were thrown at me severally, the ones meant for her were always snatched away from her and Bernadette, Louise, Juan, Fernando did the answering for her. It was pissing me off.

“Let her speak.” I told one of my grand uncles when they tried to cut her out again.

“No, everyone should speak as they want and when they’re done, I will start with mine.” Carmen replied and sat back.

Arguments sprouted. It was all about Carmen. How can a woman who was married into the Alejandrozz be so rude and arrogant to the affairs of the company. Alejandrozz is a company which is worldwide and everyone knows about this company just like FILA and FENDI or maybe GUCCI and DIOR.We need to give this company some respect, a woman of the Alejandrozz should know when to speak and when not to, when to act when not to. Her aim as a woman in the company is to bring together and not scatter it. Or is it because Carmen is a child, maybe that’s why she acts as she likes.

“Miss Carmen must be divorced.” They finally admitted it after the long run of talking and bulling around.

“Yes. She’s doing more harm to the company than the good it’s bringing.”

“Why will I divorce my wife when she did nothing wrong?”

“Because that’s what the company needs. Do you know the gravity of what she’s done?” One of the company elder asked. “We’re considering not taking her to court not because she’s Mr. Sebastian’s daughter but because she helped die down the rumour which sprouted two days ago. Otherwise, we would’ve sued her family.”

Carmen was silent.

Carmen’s silence was maddening. I was wracking my brain, trying to figure out what she was thinking. Was she upset with me? Or them? Was she bored? I couldn’t tell, and it was driving me crazy. I watched her carefully, waiting for any sign of what she was feeling. But her expression was unreadable, her face an impenetrable mask. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to break the silence, no matter what the consequences.

“Carmen,” I said hesitantly. “Are you okay?”

She gave me a little smile and nodded her head.

“I’m glad they’re bringing this issue up now Sir, Carmen is too young to be in this company,”Bernadette started, “she don’t even have quality education, I mean, she’s still in school, without purpose or use__”

“Bernadette,” I warned her with my eyes. She’s going a bit far and I don’t like it.

“Yes! You’re scared cuz we’re discussing your sins and how big it’s going to affect the company. Do you even know the problem of the company Ricardo?”

“And what’s the problem?”

“You! Ricardo, right from the first day dad announced you as the heir of this company, all this problem started, if you don’t like the fact that you have to divorce Carmen to keep this company, then I don’t know what else you want or opting for.”

“Bernadette is right bro. Stop acting tough, like you have anything in you at all.” Fernando replied.

Carmen slammed her palms on the table, the sound echoing through the room like a gunshot. Everyone went silent, frozen in shock. Carmen’s eyes were blazing, her lips curled into a snarl. She was seething with anger, and it was palpable in the air.

“I am Miss Alejandro,” she hissed. “And whether you like it or not, you have no right to tell me where to sit or when not to.” Her voice was cold and hard, but there was a hint of pain beneath the surface.

“So what are you going to do if we don’t do as you want?” One of the elders asked, probably external board members from my father’s branch.

“I take you out.”

“What?”

“You heard me. Any of you who trouble me, either I ki|| you or I keep you out of jobs.”

“Ricardo, hold your wife’s tongue, she have started talking again!” Juan yelled.

“And he won’t hold me.” She left my side, though I was scared to let her tread alone, I still had to let her exercise her own power.

“Look let me tell you, no one has the right to tell Cardo what to do and what not to. Look at the press men everywhere, I want them to take this home with them that I, Mrs. Carmen Alejandro said that, she’s not leaving, she’s not running away neither will she be scared of anyone.” She was standing infront of Bernadette.

“I tell you where to sit and you do that. I tell you where to stand and that’s what you’re going to do, because I’m Carmen Sebastian Alejandro.”

I smiled with praise for her. Actually, she’s supposed to be the CEO not me. She knows how to keep everyone’s mouth shut and knows when to open them.

“How dare you thr_@ten me! How dare you try to sit me down!!” Bernadette was standing and shouting on top of her voice towards her.

“Make some more noise and I will make sure you won’t get access to any money coming from this company for a week, let me see how you’re going to survive with that.”

“You watch your wife thr_@ten me Ricardo.”

“She’s my wife and not my slave.” I cut in sharply.

“Ricardo!!!”

“Bernadette!!! Leave my husband alone. All of you!!! Keep your mouth shut and cease speaking of taking me out! That you can’t have access to Cardo again because of me, so sorry but no one can tell me how to act except myself!”

And me too.

Carmen stopped talking and everyone was quiet, she stepped out of the room while everyone sighed out, murmuring began.

“Mr. Ricardo, your wife is making a wrong choice and that because she doesn’t know how the world works and stop putting her out there__” I stood up and walked out on everyone running after Carmen.

No sign of her anywhere, “Have you seen my wife?” I asked a worker I ran into and she nodded and pointed towards the direction of the design studio by the left side of the building and I heaved.

How the heck did she reach there, I took to my heels before I noticed Mando and Griffin with a few of my guards running after me.

“Sir,”Mando called.

“Yes??”

“I think Miss Carmen is doing something.”

I hurried faster and didn’t breathe until I got into the studio. I looked around at first, already loosing it since I can’t find her. Then I heard her voice.

“Why are these dresses so poorly made, and the shoe?” I searched for her with her voice, the design studio is so large and filled to the brim with workers and finding her wasn’t that easy.

She was standing and yelling at a worker. “Why do I feel like you’re not telling me the truth? You have been snooping around, haven’t you? Can I see your phone?” Carmen asked and stretched out her hand while the girl kept fidgeting.

“Can I see your phone.”

” Ma…” Carmen snatched the phone away from her and the next thing I heard was. “You’re fired.”

And the girl fell to her knees begging. “I’m sorry, I just wanted to take care of my sick brother.”

“And you think that gave you the rights to be selling out our designs to Miss Bernadette Alejandrozz? For God knows how long you’ve been doing this.”

“I was doing this because__”

“Is anyone out there? Please take her away before I pull out all the hairs on her head.” And that’s when her eyes fell on me. My heartbeat quickened. It always does, I heard that couples after getting married slowly lose interest in each other but that’s not true. The only death that can ki|| me is Carmen because each day, my love for her triple, it over fills my heart and make me unable to think.

I sent the guards to go get the girl. I don’t want to ask about why she’s punishing her on the first day she showed up officially at my workplace, everyone she fires is bad and no need to argue about it.

I looked around and every worker were fretting, shaking.
She came towards me. “All your workers are thieves. How have you been working in these sort of environment?”

I was mute. Listening to her speak is enough for me.

“I mean, how can you be up there thinking of all the money they stole from you when this is actually the people who are ripping you off.”

“And what are we going to do about it?”

“We fire them.”
