Chapter Nine
“Now that the cake have been ordered to your liking. We only have to over see the whole thing again and then we wait for the D-day”Fannie said as Dora drive into the Van Estate.
“You sure are right”Dora replied happily even as she stopped the car.
“They are waiting for our return. Aren’t they quite charming?”Dora asked as they stared through the glass. She was able to define John and Chris but she couldn’t define the man standing there with them.
“Seems like they have a guest. Let’s go greet them” Dora said as she got out of the car while Fannie followed suit.
She looked up a smile plastered on her face but when she saw the face of the guest with them clearly. The smile faltered.
It can’t be! It just can’t be! After all this years of not seeing him, here he is, right in front of her.
“What are you waiting for? Let’s go”Dora said jolting her back to reality.
She went after Dora heading towards the men while trying to calm her nerves. She just have to pretend. She have to act like she doesn’t know him and he might not even remember her.
She had been a passerby in his life and after how she left him. He would have forgotten her. She thought as she got to them ignoring him.
“How was your day?”John asked as he gave Dora a kiss.
“It’s been hectic. Fannie and I are both tired”Dora said starring at her.
“That’s not good. I clearly told you not to stress yourself Fannie”Chris said as he moved towards her taking hold of her hand.
She would have pulled her hand but Fannie knew Alfred was watching and so she let Chris have his way.
“And who is he?”Dora asked as all eyes turned to Alfred.
“This Alfred. Remember my close from college? The one I told you about a few days ago. Well here is in real flesh”John introduced.
“Nice to meet you Dora”Alfred said giving Dora a big smile before he directed his gaze at Fannie.
“And she is?”He asked.
To others it might seem like they were just meeting for the first time but she knew that Alfred recognise her just like she did with him.
“She is Fannie Hill”John introduced and just like he did earlier with Dora. He put his hand out for a hand shake which she took quickly.
“Fannie here working for Chris as his secretary and also she is the girl we were talking about a while ago. Isn’t she pretty?”John muttered to Alfred.
“She is. He sure is lucky”Alfred muttered at John before starring at her.
Fannie wondered what he and John were muttering when Dora questioned them but they couldn’t give a reply because a little girl ran out of the house towards them.
“Is she here? Is the bride to be here?”The girl questioned as she ran to John who carried her into his arms.
“Of course she is. Our little kiddo here have been wanting to meet you” John said to Dora who acquainted herself with Dora who so happens to like children.
“She’s so cute. Is she your child?” Dora asked Alfred who nodded proudly in return.
Fannie stared at the child sadly. She had read somewhere in a magazine that he had gotten just a few months after she left but she didn’t know that he had a child.
“It’s you! You were the one I saw in the car”The little girl said as she stared at Fannie.
Fannie had been too deep in thought that she didn’t look at the little girl properly.
“Have you met her before?” Chris asked Fannie who nodded.
“I saw her today when we were in a traffic jam. How are you cutie?”Fannie asked as she knelt in front of Sarah who had gotten out of John arms to stand in front of her.
“Am not a cutie. You are “Sarah said as she touched Fannie cheek while the adult laughed except Alfred.
“Isn’t she pretty dad?”Sarah asked and Alfred stared at Fannie for a while before saying a yes.
“Okay why don’t we go to our rooms and prepare for the evening ahead. Dad and mom are out but you get to meet them in the evening” John said to Alfred as he took him to his room.
It was evening and almost time for Dinner and Fannie who should have gotten dressed and ready was still sitted on her bed contemplating if she should go or not.
She has been hiding for years knowing that someday her hiding will come to an end and that someday she will get to meet Alfred again but what she didnt think of is that she will get to meet him again this soon.
Should she leave and get away before he starts questioning her or should she stay and pretend not to know him? She was still thinking about it when there was a knock on her door.
She went to open only to find Chris standing there. Not wanting to be alone with him. She walk out of the room.
“Is something wrong? “Chris asked as he stared at her
“What do you mean ?”
“You aren’t dressed for the dinner. Are you feeling sick or…..”
“It’s not that. Have been occupied doing something and so I lost track of time. I was about to get ready when you knocked”She replied.
“Alright. Just don’t over do it”Chris told her as he pushed a strand of hair back from her face.
The first time she met Chris had been years ago. He had been the one to offer her help and had taken care of her. He have always treated her like his employee. She only got close to him and become his friend when the wedding was being organised. But recently she has been noticing that his behaviour is somehow different from the one of a friend. More like a man who is trying to woo the woman he likes.
“I won’t”She replied as she tried to move away but that was prevented when he pulled her to him. Hugging her tight.
“What are you doing?”She asked.
“Just hugging you”He replied and not wanting to hurt his feelings. She hugged him back.
“Pretty Fannie!”On hearing the child call. She pulled away from Chris to see Sarah running towards her while Alfred stood a distance away starring at them. How long have he been standing there? She thought as she carried Sarah into her arms.
“Aren’t you coming for dinner?” Sarah asked claiming her attention
“I am. I just want to get dressed”Fannie replied.
“Then can I stay with you?” Sarah asked eagerly.
“We need to give pretty Fannie the chance to get change”Chris said.
“And have also told you to stop being jumpy at times Sarah”Alfred added as he moved towards them.
“Am not being jumpy daddy and I won’t intrude on pretty Fannie getting dressed. I just want to be with her”Sarah said to the two men fiercely while she tightened her hold on Fannie
“Sarah let’s just……”
“Let her stay. She’s a real cutie”Fannie said to Alfred who was about to take Sarah.
“We will join you soon”Fannie said quickly while she went into the room.
Alfred stood looking at the closed door before starring at Chris who was telling him to come with him.
“She is in safe hands. Fannie like kids” Chris said
“I know. I could tell from the way she welcomed Sarah”Alfred said.
“That’s Fannie. Always welcoming”Chris said and Alfred wondered just how many welcome she had given Chris.
He had thought that he would never see her again and he had brought Sarah here to tighten his bond with her but surprisingly Sarah has taken a liken to Fannie.
The girl who had left him stranded without a word. When he had first seen her. His had wanted to take her somewhere and get all his questions answered but with a lot of people around that would be hard to do.
He just had to wait for the right time and force the truth out of her. Seeing her again had woken some of his feelings. Feelings he thought he had buried long ago.
He will get her to talk and if her reason is justifiable enough. He won’t let her go not even to the man beside him. He thought as he stared at Chris.
